
49ers Finish In 8th Place At Big West Championships

Rancho Santa Margarita - The Long Beach State men's and women's golf team's concluded the 2007-08 campaign on Tuesday morning at the Big West Conference Championships as the women's team moved up in the standings from sixth place to fifth and the men's team finished in eighth at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club.
The 49er women recorded their best score of the two-day tournament with a 305 in the final round to finish with a 78-over par 942, one stroke behind fourth place Cal Poly. On Monday, the 49ers carded a 316 and 321. UC Irvine claimed the team title as the Anteaters finished with a 44-over 908 (312-295-301), seven shots ahead of second place UC Davis.
Individually for the women's team, freshman Reina Rogers was the top individual for LBSU as she powered her way back up in the standings as she gained 12-spots to finish in 6th place. Rogers shot a 2-under 70 in the final round for a total of 13-over 229. Senior Katy Barrett and Sophomore Brenda Chhuor both finished tied for 9th as Chhuor recorded a 3-over 75 and Barrett finished with a 5-over 77. Chhuor was named to the Big West All Conference Team as she made Honorable Mention. Freshmen Erin Cylke tied for 26th and Lindsey McAtee finished in 28th.
The 49er men improved their play in the final round as LBSU improved by 22-shots as they recorded a 288. The 49ers shot a 310 in both first and second rounds on Monday. UC Irvine claimed the team title by one shot over UC Davis as the Anteaters finished with a 15-under 849.
Individually for the men's team, senior JJ Katnik was the top 49er as he closed out his career at LBSU with an even-72 in the final round to finish tied for 24th place. Sophomore Micheal Drake finished two spots back as he tied for 26th with an even-72. Drake was also named to the Big West All-Conference Team as he made Honorable Mention. Freshman Ricky Montanez finished tied for 29th, followed by sophomore Karl Katnik in 36th and freshman Eric Pitcaithley in 37th.
"I told the players last night to not dwell on the first two rounds and go out today and finish the year with a round they could be proud of shooting," said 49er Head Men's Coach Bob Livingstone. "Even though we were 4 over on our last hole, this was much more indicative of our ability, and leaves a much better taste in our mouths for the summer."
The 49er golf teams will host a first-ever banquet that will take place on Saturday, May 10 at Smooth's Sports Bar & Grille on Pine Avenue in downtown Long Beach.
