Campbell Spoils Long Beach State Comeback

Long Beach, Calif. - In a contest eerily similar to the last time these teams met, Long Beach State fell on the short end of a defensive battle, losing 51-48. Jessica Campbell's baseline jumper gave the Aggies a three-point lead with 50 seconds to play, and Valeriya Musina's final attempt to tie came up just short in the 49er loss.
Trouble from long-range hurt the 49ers all night, as Long Beach State got an early trey from Melanie Lisnock but would then miss their next 11, ending the night 2-14 overall from three. That was part of a tough shooting night for the 49ers overall, as Long Beach State ended the night at 35%. The defense held UC Davis to a mark under that, as the Aggies ended at 32.7%, but hit 17 free throws to make up the distance.
LaTorya Barbee kicked off the action by scoring off of a quick fast break. After opening the game at a 4-4 tie, the 49ers began a 7-0 run, highlighted by a Lisnock three to take an 11-4 lead. UC Davis cut the lead back to 13-12 after an Anna Harp drive, but the 49ers continued to hold onto a close lead through the next four minutes to 5:30 before an Aggie three tied the game. The 49ers continued to press the pace, picking up two steals and a pair of fast-break baskets to extend a 23-17 lead with 3:35 in the first.
UC Davis answered by hitting two quick baskets, getting a deuce before hitting Haylee Donaghe for a three, and took their first lead after hitting two free throws. The Aggies would add another pair of free throws to take a 26-23 lead into the half.
Barbee picked up the first basket in second half as well, and Long Beach State worked to tie the game at 28-28. Paige Mintun hit a jumper to break the tie for UC Davis, and the Aggies began a 5-0 run. Long Beach State recovered to cut lead to one with 13:30 to play after a Figueroa fast break.
UC Davis extended their lead to 37-32, but after a basket at 12:15 Long Beach came all the way back. Tied 38-38 with 9:16 after a Barbee putback, an offensive lull from both teams continued until UC Davis took a five point lead with just under five minutes to play, scoring from the line on the bonus.
The 49ers still held close late cutting the lead to three with just over three minutes to play, but UC Davis held onto their five-point advantage. Long Beach State mounted a late comeback, cutting the lead back to one following a Musina three-pointer with one minute to play.
Think Pink! Long Beach State plays another home game this week, hosting Pacific as the team wants fans to think pink on Saturday, as half of the games proceeds will be donated towards breast cancer research. The first 600 fans through the gates will also receive a pink t-shirt. Tipoff for that game is at 5 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid.
