HOUSTON, TX--Long Beach State closer Bryan Shaw (Pleasanton) was named to the initial list of honorees for the Clemens Award, given annually to college baseball's top pitcher.
Inaugurated in 2004, Dirtbag Pitcher and National Player of the Year Jered Weaver was the first recipient.
Shaw, who has been the Dirtbags closer for the previous two-plus seasons, is third all-time in career saves with 16. Ranking second in the Big West in saves with 11 last year, Shaw produced a 2.39 ERA. As a freshman he had a 2.25 ERA. Over 56 career relief appearances, he is 7-4 with a 2.21 ERA, including three games this season.
Shaw, pre-season all-conference selection, was also on the initial list of candidates for the Brooks Wallace Award, given to the top college player.
Shaw is one of three players in the Big West named to the list, as UC Irvine starter Scott Gorgen and UC Riverside closer Joe Kelly are also on the list.
