49ers Struggle In Final Round At Western Intercollegiate

Santa Cruz, Calif. - Long Beach State shot a 311 in the final round of the 62nd Western Intercollegiate to record an 82-over 922 score to finish in 15th place. The 49ers fell two spots from the second round, but finished ahead of Michigan State in the third round at the Pasatiempo Golf Course. The Spartans shot a 314 to finish tied for second with fellow Big West Conference member UC Irvine. Saint Mary's claimed the team title as the Gaels won by one shot with a total of 880.
"It was a very difficult day out there ... we shot 311, and that was three shots better than Michigan State -- the No. 25th ranked team in the nation," said LBSU Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "And if they had shot what we did, they would have won the tournament by two."
Individually for the 49ers, Michael Drake was the top player for LBSU as he greatly moved up in the standing from 51st in the second round to tie for 33rd. Drake shot a two-over 74 on Thursday morning to finish with a three-round total of 227. Ricky Montanez dropped one spot as he shot a five-over 77 on the last day. Issei Suenaga tied for 50th with a 231, followed by Karl Katnik tied for 75th and Jeremy Keller at 86th.
"The tough conditions were actually a great learning experience for all of our young guys," said Livingstone. "The leader in the tournament (who was brilliant the first 36 holes at 66-69) shot an 81 today...college golf is really tough, and I think that our guys learned to never give up and that every single shot is important!"
The 49ers return to action next week as LBSU travels up the coast to Santa Barbara for the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. First round play begins on Monday, Mar. 31.
