FIRST TEE: Long Beach State travels up to San Jose for the Spartan Invitational as the 49ers play in their second tournament of the spring season ... first and second round action begins on Monday, March 3, with the final round concluding on Tuesday, March 4 at the Almaden Country Club (par-72, 6,179 yards) ... Lindsey McAtee, Reina Rogers, Katy Barrett, Kylie Kimura and Kira Murashige will be playing in this year's Spartan Invitational ... 15 teams will be participating in this year's tournament (California, UC Irvine, Colorado, Colorado State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Hawai'i, Idaho, Long Beach State, North Carolina, Oregon State, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara and Washington.
LAST TIME IN SAN JOSE: The 49ers last visited San Jose was back in the spring of 2003 ... LBSU (332-332) finished the two-round Spartan Invitational in 7th place (out of 12 teams) as they shot a total of 664 ... Carla Legaspi and Marie Louise Juul were the top 49ers as both tied for 19th with a 161 ... Melissa Keller and Teal Thron tied for 39th with a 171.
EWART ON SAN JOSE TOURNAMENT: Bright sunny sky's are predicted for the next three days which will work well for our 36 hole round tomorrow. "We gained some positive feedback from Fresno so we'll be looking to improve against this much tougher field," said 49er Head Coach Sue Ewart. LBSU OPENS SPRING IN FRESNO: The 49ers opened the spring season in Fresno last week as The Beach completed the two-round Kitahara Fresno State Invitational in 11th place ... the 49ers shot an opening round of 306 to finish in 9th for the day and finished the final round with a 316 ... Lindsey McAtee had her best performance of the year as recorded her first top-20 finish as she tied for 20th ... McAtee shot a 3-under 69 on the first day as she finished in first place all alone ... "The finish at Fresno was not what we had hoped for," said Ewart. "There were definitely some bright spots along the way but we need all five girls playing solid from day to day if we're going to be competitive for the conference championship."
ROGERS CONTINUES TO IMPROVE HER GAME: Freshman Regina Rogers continues to improve her swing and putting as she remains consistent in her four tournaments she's played in ... Rogers had her second best finish this year as she tied for 34th place at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational last week ... she leads the team with an average of 77.00 ... "Reina onceagain impresses with her solid play from day to day. She is consistent, level headed and unflappable. The more experience she has the better she'll be.
BEACH SIGNS TWO FOR NEXT SEASON: Long Beach State Head Women's Golf Coach Sue Ewart announced over the winter break that Simone Hoey (Rancho Cucamonga) and Lee Lopez (Whittier) have signed National Letters-of-Intent with the 49ers ... Hoey, the sister of Kay Hoey, is the Summer Metro Player of the Year for the Southern California PGA Junior Tour ... Hoey represented Southern California at the Mary Cave Cup where she finished 7th ... She has also competed at the Junior World Championship in 2006 where she finished 27th ... Hoey is no stranger to the Southern California golf scene where she has competed extensively for the past several years. Her scoring average of 75.82 has included several wins this year ... Lopez, a senior at La Serna High School is currently ranked No. 9 in the Golfweek rankings and is a Rolex Junior All-America Honorable Mention ... She has dominated Southern California junior golf for the past few years and is the Toyota Tour Cup Player of the Year and JAGS Player of the Year for the past three years ... She has also won back-to-back titles at the Junior America's Cup while representing Southern California. This past year she competed in 10 AJGA events, finishing in the top five three times including one win ... Her scoring average with the AJGA is 74.13 while her scoring average on the Toyota Tour Cup is 73.62 ... Lee is also the newly crowned CIF State Champion, shooting two-under at Poppy Hills and winning by two shots ... She advanced to the CIF State by winning the Southern California region with a score of 69 at Diamond Bar.
NEXT UP FOR THE BEACH: The 49ers are back in action on Mar. 10-12, as they travel back to Las Vegas for the UNLV Spring Invitational in Boulder City, Nev.
