Long Beach, Calif. - LONG BEACH - Michaela Hasalikova made 11 kills on .625 hitting as the 49ers defeated Yale in the first match of the Baden Thanksgiving Classic 30-26, 30-14, 30-16. Quincy Verdin added 10 kills as the 49ers improved to 23-6 on the season.
After a competitive first game, Long Beach State easily outclassed the Bulldogs as the 49ers put together a complete effort, helped by strong serving as the team picked up 11 aces overall. Junior Nicole Vargas made a career high five aces to lead the team, and Talaya Whitfield and Cynthia Buggs both had two aces.
The 49ers opened up a small lead in the first game and mostly traded sideouts with Yale overall in taking a 30-26 win in game one, as Yale outhit the 49ers in that first game .267 to .240. The other two games were completely different, however, as Long Beach State hit over .400 as a team in the next two games while holding Yale to negative hitting in the second and third games.
With Vargas directing the offense, the 49ers compiled a very balanced total, as Alexis Crimes added nine kills, Naomi Washington eight and Ashley Lee seven to the totals of Hasalikova and Verdin. The Bulldogs were le by Julia Mailander with nine kills.
The 49ers continue play in the Baden Thanksgiving Classic against Pitt Friday evening. First serve for that match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
