
49ers Roll To Two More Victories

POMONA, Calif. - Senior Reid Tomassi (Winter Park, Fla.) scored a career-high seven goals to help lift Long Beach State to a 19-5 win over Pomona-Pitzer at the Inland Empire Classic on Sunday morning. In the afternoon the 49ers racked up a season-high 22 goals as they defeated LaVerne 22-3. The 49ers improve to 4-0 on the year while averaging 17.5 goals per game in the four victories.
The seven goals by Tomassi is just one off the school-record of eight goals. Jeff Greenwood continued his great opening weekend by adding four goals and Justin Koeppen added two. Long Beach jumped to a 4-0 lead after one quarter and expanded the advantage to 10-1 at the half. Also tallying goals for the 49ers were Nick Korsgaden, Clint Wilson, Kevin vanHaaster, Jake Kinne, Eric Steele and Mike Del Grande. Goalie Steve MacKenzie played the entire game and finished with four goalsi saves while allowing just five goals.
In the nightcap, Koeppen and Greenwood each tallied four goals as the 49ers raced to a 9-2 halftime lead. Junior Pavle Filipovic scored three goals while Kinne and Wilson each scored twice. In goal, sophomore Derek Wiebe-Bailey allowed just three goals while picking up eight goalie saves.
The action gets tougher next weekend as the 49ers head to Northern California to take part in the NorCal Tournament. California is the host for the annual tournament which begins on Saturday.
