
49ers Roll Past Sagehens

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer scored the opening goal of the game, but that would be it for the Sagehens as Long Beach State scored 11 consecutive goals en route to an 11-1 win on Sunday at the 49er Campus Pool. The 49ers improve to 16-10 overall while Pomona fell to 13-17.
Ash Blythen and Jake Kinne led the 49er attack as each scored two goals. Seven other 49er players tallied one goal. In the cage for Long Beach, senior Steve MacKenzie had seven goalie saves through three quarters. Sophomore Derek Wiebe-Bailey played the fourth quarter, garnering three saves without allowing a goal.
Pomona got on the scoreboard first as Ryan Balikian scored at 6:36 in the first quarter. The 49ers countered with goals by Kinne (3:01) and Sean Greiner (1:38) to take a 2-1 lead after one quarter. In the second quarter the 49ers got tallies from Clint Wilson (6:21), Travis Buchanan (5:34) and Nick Korsgaden (2:27) to take a 5-1 halftime advantage. Blythen tallied both of his goals in the third quarter as the 49ers pulled away.
Long Beach State will be home this coming week for two games. On Thursday, November 8 they host Loyola Marymount at 7 pm at the Campus Pool. Sunday, November 11 will bring the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos to town for a 12 pm contest.
