
49ers Drop Tough One To UCSB

LONG BEACH, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara's Ross Sinclair scored both of his goals in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with 1:24 left, to lift the Gauchos to a 7-6 win over Long Beach State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) men's water polo showdown at the 49er Campus Pool. The 49ers fall to 17-11 overall and 2-5 in the MPSF while the Gauchos improved to 18-11 and 3-4 in league action.
Sinclair and Milos Golic both tallied two goals for the Gauchos to lead their offensive attack. With the game tied 4-4 after three quarters, the two teams traded goals in the fourth stanza before the Gauchos scored the game-winner. Sinclair scored at 6:57 to give UCSB a 5-4 lead, but the 49ers answered right back at 5:17 as Reid Tomassi scored his second goal of the day. UCSB went up 6-5 at 3:21 on a Miles Price tally, only to see the 49ers tie it at 3:01 on Jeff Greenwood's second goal of the afternoon.
The game was tied five times throughout, with the biggest lead just two goals (3-1, UCSB). UCSB goalie Fraser Bunn recorded 11 goalie saves, including three in the fourth quarter. His counterpart from Long Beach, Steve MacKenzie recorded six saves.
The 49ers jumped to a 1-0 lead on Greenwood's first goal of the day at 7:15. UCSB came back with two goals by Milos Golic (6:01, 1:11) in the first quarter to take a 2-1 lead. UCSB took a 3-1 lead on Travis Watts' goal at 4:45 in the second quarter, but the 49ers scored on their next possession as Nick Korsgaden found the back of the net at 4:17 making the score 3-2 at the half.
Long Beach will next be in action on Sunday, November 18 when they host UCLA at 12 pm in the Campus Pool in the final regular season game of the season.
