LONG BEACH - Long Beach State Head Women's Golf Coach Sue Ewart has announced that Simone Hoey (Rancho Cucamonga) and Lee Lopez (Whittier) have signed National Letters-of-Intent with the 49ers.
Hoey, the sister of Kay Hoey, is the Summer Metro Player of the Year for the Southern California PGA Junior Tour. Hoey represented Southern California at the Mary Cave Cup where she finished 7th. She has also competed at the Junior World Championship in 2006 where she finished 27th. Hoey is no stranger to the Southern California golf scene where she has competed extensively for the past several years. Her scoring average of 75.82 has included several wins this year.
Lopez, a senior at La Serna High School is currently ranked No. 9 in the Golfweek rankings and is a Rolex Junior All-America Honorable Mention. She has dominated Southern California junior golf for the past few years and is the Toyota Tour Cup Player of the Year and JAGS Player of the Year for the past three years. She has also won back-to-back titles at the Junior America's Cup while representing Southern California. This past year she competed in 10 AJGA events, finishing in the top five three times including one win. Her scoring average with the AJGA is 74.13 while her scoring average on the Toyota Tour Cup is 73.62. Lee is also the newly crowned CIF State Champion, shooting two-under at Poppy Hills and winning by two shots. She advanced to the CIF State by winning the Southern California region with a score of 69 at Diamond Bar.
"I'm extremely pleased to announce the signing of two incredibly talented student-athletes for the Fall of 2008," said Ewart. "Both players are dedicated and determined to succeed at the next level and have the athletic and academic ability to be future of All American's. Lee and Simone will provide a solid platform for the next several years and both girls will make an immediate impact with their ability to shoot low scores in highly competitive fields. I'm looking forward to their continued success here at Long Beach State."
