SAN FRANCISCO - The odds caught up with Long Beach State on Saturday night in San Francisco. After winning two games earlier this season in overtime, The Beach dropped a 78-74 decision in double overtime to San Francisco.
Donovan Morris led the 49ers with 21 points, five in the two overtimes, while Casper Ware had 14 and Arturas Lazdauskas chipped in 10. USF smothered Morris for most of the game allowing him to take just 15 shots. He added a team-high eight rebounds and dished out a team-best five assists.
Dior Lowhorn led the Dons with 26 points. LBSU made four more shots during the game, but watched as USF shot 17 more free throws and out-rebounded the 49ers by seven.
Morris helped push the game into double overtime when he followed a Casper Ware miss with less than 10 seconds to play in the first overtime. Morris was there with the put back to push the game into the second overtime, the second double-OT game of the season for LBSU.
Arturas Lazdauskas kept the 49ers in the game in the first overtime scoring their first four points. Six of Lazdauskas' 10 points came in the two overtimes. Morris scored 14 of his points in the second half, including the shot that sent it into overtime. Morris drove, pulled up in the lane and made the shot with 34 seconds to play. USF couldn't score on its last shot and the game went to overtime, the third overtime game of the year for The Beach.
The 49ers built a 20-10 first half lead in the first 11 minutes of the game, but USF climbed back to take a 28-27 halftime lead.
Ware led The Beach before the break scoring eight points on 3-of-5 shooting. Seven other 49ers scored in the first half but none more than four points.
LBSU made 42.3 percent (11-of-26) of its field goal attempts in the first half, but connected on just 3-of-10 from 3-point range. The Dons managed to make just 37 percent (10-of-27) of their shots in the first half, but made one more 3-pointer to account for the 1-point lead.
