EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon went on a 16-2 run in the first 4 minutes and 50 seconds of the second half to break open a close game en route to an 86-74 win at McArthur Court on Monday night.
Long Beach State (5-7) committed five turnovers to help the Ducks push a six-point halftime lead into a 20-point lead with 14:57 to play in the game.
The Beach battled back cutting the lead to nine, 69-60, with 7:45 to play on a hoop by Greg Plater. Freshman T.J. Robinson keyed the 49er run with a number of baskets. He finished with 17 points, all but two in the second half.
Oregon pushed the lead back to double digits but the 49ers rallied again cutting the deficit to eight, 78-70, with 1:56 to play on a bucket by Donovan Morris.
Morris finished with a team-high 18 points. Larry Anderson added 14 for Long Beach State
Poor free throw shooting and 22 turnovers doomed the 49ers as they fell to 1-6 on the road. LBSU made just 12-of-21 free throws while Oregon knocked down 27-of-36 free throws.
"We lost our composure for the first time all year against pressure," LBSU coach Dan Monson said. "We really didn't execute against the press and get to the right spots. They made a 16-2 run at home to start the second half and you just can't dig yourself out of that hole."
Oregon (6-6) took a 45-39 lead into the break. LBSU shot a blistering 66.7 percent in the first half but turned it over 12 times, leading to 12 Oregon points, to help the Ducks to the lead. Oregon also held a 12-0 advantage in second chance points at the half, while making 10 more free throws. The Ducks were 13-of-15 from the charity stripe, while the 49ers made just 3-of-7.
Morris led The Beach scoring 11 of his points in the first half. Anderson added nine.
Oregon, which shot 48.3 percent in the first half, got 11 in the first half from Joevan Catron.
