Long Beach, Calif. - Junior Middle Blocker Naomi Washington was named to the All-West Region team, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association today. Senior setter Nicole Vargas also earned honorable mention honors for Long Beach State.
Washington and Vargas were key members of the 2008 Long Beach State volleyball team that won the program's ninth Big West championship and also secured a 22nd consecutive NCAA appearance, the only program in the Big West qualify for the postseason.
Washington finished the season hitting. 351, good for second place in the conference standings while also ranking nationally in that category. An effective hitter, Washington's 288 kills were third on the team, and she led the 49ers in blocks with 115 on the season.
Vargas finished an excellent four-year career for the 49ers with another strong season at setter, starting every match this year. Her 1,259 assists in 2008 placed her fourth all-time in school history, and she became the ninth player in school history to top 1,000 digs in her career, finishing with 310, second-most on the team.
Washington and Vargas become the 23rd and 24th All-Region honorees in LBSU history. The tandem's selection is also the first time the 49ers have had multiple honorees since 2005, when Alexis Crimes and Erika Chidester both got the nod. Crimes alone was selected the last two years.
