Long Beach, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss to UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon at George Allen Field. After a 1-1 tie in regulation and two scoreless overtime periods, the game was forced into a shootout. A miss on LBSU"S eighth penalty kick attempt by Yeraldy Hurtado allowed the Gauchos to take home the championship and victory with a 6-5 penalty kick advantage.
In a physical game, UCSB (12-6-3) got on the board first in the 52nd minute on an Alyssa Oldham header, her first goal of the season. Jacqui Simon earned the assist, her eighth of the year.
Long Beach State (14-4-4) responded with a goal of their own less than three minutes later. At the 52:56 mark, Bo Rael took a free kick from the right side of the field and Mariko Strickland headed it to Dana Farquhar who scored from the top of the box. Farquhar tallied her second goal of the season, while Strickland added her team-high sixth assist.
The 49ers outshot the Gauchos 19-13 and had the advantage in shots on goal (9-7). Kristen Kiefer, Lindsay Bullock, and Farquhar took three shots apiece. Senior goalkeeper Liz Ramos made six saves.
The match was the first time the 49ers have advanced to the Big West Tournament finals under head coach Mauricio Ingrassia. The 49ers are still in line for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and the selection show will be aired live on ESPNews tomorrow between 5-5:30 p.m. PST.
