No. 10 Mens Water Polo Takes Two in Davis

DAVIS, Calif.-- Tenth-ranked Long Beach State used big first periods to power past No. 20 Air Force and No. 11 UC Davis Sunday afternoon at Schall Aquatics Center in Davis, Calif.
After a tough loss on Saturday to the No. 2 ranked Stanford Cardinal, No. 10 Long Beach State (11-12) had to gear up for two more tough games Sunday afternoon against No. 20 Air Force and No. 11 UC Davis. The Beach came away with two victories for the day, defeating Air Force, 12-9, and the host-squad Aggies, 9-7.
The 49ers first faced off against No. 20 Air Force. Three 49ers, Jake Kinne, Jeff Greenwood and Shane Luth, used two-goal efforts to battle past the Falcons and come away with a win.
The Beach scored first with a 6-on-5 goal by senior Jake Kinne, and took a 2-0 lead a minute later with a shot from junior Jeff Greenwood. Another 6-on-5 situation led to another 49er goal from freshman Jordan Koeppen, and with an Air Force goal thrown into the mix, the Beach looked to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter. But a dramatic goal from junior Kevin Mundia at, literally, the last second, put LBSU up 4-1 after the first period.
The Falcons cut the 49er lead to two in the second quarter, but the Beach held on to take a 5-3 lead into halftime. Air Force played a game of catch up in the third quarter, tying the 49ers with two 6-on-5 goals of their own in the period. But when Aleksander Petrovic scored a goal to put the Beach up 7-6 late in the third period, the 49ers never again relinquished the lead. LBSU outscored the Falcons 4-3 in the fourth period to hold onto a 12-9 win over No. 20 Air Force.
In their second game of the day, the 49ers took on the hosts of Sunday's tournament, the No. 11 Aggies of UC Davis. The second game started exactly the same as the first but in reverse, as the Aggies scored first on a 6-on-5 goal. The rest of the period belonged to LBSU however, who took an early 4-1 lead and never looked back. The squads swapped goals in the second period, and Long Beach St. took a 5-2 lead into the half.
The Beach only outscored the Aggies 5-4 in the second half, but because of the strong first period, the 49ers walked away from their second game of the afternoon with a 9-7 victory. Jake Kinne scored two goals against the Aggies as he did against the Falcons to lead his squad to two wins for the day. Goalie Derek Wiebe-Bailey notched 10 goalie saves against the eleventh-ranked squad, including two 6-on-5 attempts.
This week, Long Beach State will host No. 5 Pepperdine, Thursday October 30th at 7:00 p.m. PT at the 49er Campus Pool. The 49ers will welcome the trip home, having played the last nine of ten games on the road.
