Long Beach, Calif. - Entering into its second year, the Long Beach State student-athlete phone-a-thon continues to help make a positive impact both with maintaining ties with The Beach's former greats and supporting current Long Beach State 49ers.
The 49er Athletic Club and Long Beach State sports teams are off to a great start with the 2008 student-athlete phone-a-thon. Four teams have participated thus far and have raised over $30,000. "We are well on our way to beating our overall total from last year, which was $100,000," said Development Director Wayne Stickney. "It is encouraging to see the support continue in these economically challenging times.
With seven teams still to participate, including last year's top two money-makers in baseball and women's water polo, hopes are high that the continued success of the program is assured. Additionally, Mauricio Inrgassia, Long Beach State's soccer coach, has recruited two matching gift donors, effectively tripling the amount that team will be able to raise.
"This is a major way we can help our coaches raise money to support their programs," explained Adam Wald, who serves as Long Beach State's Assistant Athletic Director for Development. "It gives us an opportunity to connect our athletes with potential donors and increase the total number of donors to the 49er Athletic Club. Last year, we saw a spike of over 700 new donors just from this fundraiser."
