THE RECORDS •49ers Host Pacific and UC Davis •Big West Home Openers This Week Long Beach State is 3-10 overall and 0-2 in the Big West Conference after dropping two games on the road last week to UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly. Pacific is 10-4 on the season and 1-0 in the Big West after an 82-54 home win over UC Riverside. UC Davis is 7-7 overall and 1-0 in the Big West after a 58-54 home win over UC Riverside.
THE COACH •Dan Monson Enters First Year At Long Beach •Career Record Of 173-131 In 10 Years Dan Monson (Idaho, 1985) is 3-10 (.231) in his first season as the head coach at Long Beach State. Monson has compiled a 173-133 (.565) record his 11th year as a Division I head coach. He was 52-17 (.754) in two years at Gonzaga, leading the Bulldogs to the Elite Eight in 1999. In eight years at Minnesota he compiled a 118-106 (.527) mark with five post-season appearances.
THE SERIES •LBSU Leads Pacific, 48-32 •LBSU Leads UC Davis, 6-1 The 49ers lead their series with Pacific by a 48-32 count. Last season the 49ers won both meetings with the Tigers, winning 92-64 in Long Beach and 82-76 in Stockton. The 49ers lead their series with UC Davis by a 6-1 margin. Long Beach has won the past five meetings with the Aggies, including both last season. The 49ers prevailed 89-75 at Davis and won 102-77 in Long Beach.
49ERS DROP TWO ON THE ROAD •Williams Scores Career-High 17 at UCSB •Morris Has 15 Points and 8 Assists at Cal Poly The 49ers dropped their Big West openers on the road last week falling at UC Santa Barbara (79-64) and at Cal Poly (64-52). On Thursday at UCSB, Cornel Williams had a career-high 17 points and Donovan Morris added 17 points as the 49ers shot .481 (25-52) from the field. Long Beach committed 22 turnovers in the contest. Darnell Porter added seven points, three assists and a career-high eight rebounds. Long Beach was down 55-52 with 10:39 left, but UCSB went on a 10-2 run to take a double-digit lead. Saturday at Cal Poly Morris had 15 points and a career-high eight rebounds in the defeat. Greg Plater added 12 points off the bench. The 49ers out-rebounded the Mustangs 34-to-29 as Morris and Williams each grabbed six boards.
PACIFIC FACTS •Tigers Off To 10-4 Start Pacific is off to a 10-4 start this season, 1-0 in the Big West. Thursday they defeated UC Riverside at home 82-54. Saturday they won at Cal State Bakersfield, 67-58. In the win over UCR guard Chad Troyer led the way with 21 points while Steffan Johnson added 18. Pacific shot .604 (29-48) from the field and were 13-29 (.448) from 3-point range. In Saturday's win at CSUB Johnson tallied 17 points and forward Anthony Brown 12. On the year Pacific is averaging 73.7 points per game and is shooting .498 from the field, tops in the Big West. Tiger opponents are averaging 66.6 points per game and are shooting .416. Johnson leads three Tigers in double digits at 15.0 points per game. Troyer averages 11.6 points and Brown is third at 10.5 points per outing. Brown leads the team in rebounding at 6.2 per game.
UC DAVIS FACTS •Aggies 7-7 On Season UC Davis has won its last two games, winning at Cal State Bakersfield 62-59 and beating UC Riverside at home 58-54 for its first-ever official Big West victory. UC Davis is 7-7 overall and 1-0 in the Big West. In the win over UCR guard Vince Oliver led the way with 16 points while Shane Hanson added 12. Against Bakersfield, Hanson had a big game with 23 points as the Aggies shot .511 (23-45) from the field and hit 10 three-pointers. On the season, Oliver leads the team at 12.9 points per game. Hanson checks in at 12.2 points per outing and forward Kyle Brucculeri is averaging 10.1 points per game. The Aggies are averaging 64.6 points per game and are shooting .452 from the field. Opponents average 66.9 points per outing and are shooting .470.
BIG WEST STATISTICS •Beach 2nd in Free Throw Percentage In the latest Big West Conference statistics the 49ers are second in the league in free throw shooting at .732 and fourth in field goal percentage defense at .442. Long Beach also ranks in the top four in the league in rebounding (4th), rebound margin (4th), offensive rebounds (4th) and defensive rebound (3rd). Individually, Donovan Morris is 1st in minutes played (37.31), 3rd in scoring (17.0 ppg), 4th in free throw percentage (.839), 4th in 3-point percentage (.463), 6th in defensive rebounds (4.46 rpg), 10th in rebounding (5.8 rpg), 10th in 3-pointers made (1.92 pg) and 10th in field goal percentage (.483).
THREE IN A ROW AT HOME •3-1 on the Season at Walter Pyramid The 49ers have won their last three home games at the Walter Pyramid and stand at 3-1 in home games this campaign. The 49ers haven't had a home game though since December 18. The last four outings have been on the road. In those past three outings the 49ers have averaged 71.3 points per game and have shot .480 (71-148) from the field. The next home game will be on Thursday, January 10 as the 49ers host Pacific.
FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE •Season-Best .556 FG% vs. USF The 49ers have shot .525 (53-101) from the field in their last two home games. They shot a season-best .556 (25-45) from the field in the win over San Francisco on December 18. They also shot .500 (28-56) in the win over Loyola Marymount at the Walter Pyramid. Long Beach has shot a better percentage than its opponents in nine of the 13 games this season.
IRON MAN •Morris Leads Big West In Minutes Junior Donovan Morris has been an "Iron Man" for the 49ers this season. He leads the team, and the Big West Conference, averaging 37.3 minutes played per game. He played all 45 minutes in the 49ers overtime game at Pepperdine and at Hawai'i and at UCSB he played all 40 minutes. All-together, he has been on the court for 485 of the 49ers 530 minutes of action this season (.915).
FREE THROW SHOOTING •Season-Best .917 at Hawai'i The 49ers are shooting .732 at the free throw line this season, a mark which ranks second in the Big West Conference. Long Beach shot a season-best .917 (11-12) at Hawai'i. The 49ers have shot .800 or better at the line in four of its last six games. In its last six outings the 49ers are shooting .779 (60-77) at the charity stripe. In the four home contests the 49ers are shooting .778 (56-72) at the line. Individually, Donovan Morris is shooting .893 (25-28) from the line in the past eight games.
CLOSE CALLS ON THE ROAD •Four Close Outings The 49ers have been close, but just haven't been able to get over the hump on the road this year. The 49ers are 0-8 on the road, but they have dropped four tight games. They fell in overtime at Pepperdine on November 21 and suffered four-point losses at Saint Louis (52-48), at Hawai'i (61-57) and against Bucknell (61-57). In the game at Washington, the score was tied 61-61 with 9:36 left on the clock.
MORRIS CONTINUES SCORING STREAK •Career-High 27 Points vs. Bucknell Junior guard Donovan Morris continues to be the 49ers top scoring threat this season. He leads the squad in scoring at 17.0 points per game, having hit double digits in 12 consecutive contests. Morris also is the 49ers leading rebounder at 5.8 boards per game. He scored a career-high 27 points against Bucknell on December 29, his fifth game this season with 20 or more points. Against Bucknell he knocked down a career-high seven three-pointers. Morris was named the Big West Player of the Week on December 24 after he recorded a then-career-high 26 points in the 49ers 71-68 win over San Francisco. Morris is shooting .483 overall from the field, .463 (25-54) from three-point range and .839 (52-62) at the free throw line. Toss out his opening game vs. BYU (1-15 FG, 0-4 3-pt) and Morris is shooting .530 (71-134) overall and .500 (25-50) from three-point range.
GALLOW STEPS UP •Career-High 8 Points at UCSB Junior Brice Gallow had a strong weekend in the Central Coast for the 49ers averaging 6.0 points per game. He had a career-high eight points at UCSB, adding a rebound and an assist. At Cal Poly he played a career-best 25 minutes finishing with four points. Gallow had played a total of just 20 minutes spanning the previous six games heading into last weekend and had scored a total of two points. He is now averaging 1.8 points per game.
WILLIAMS RECORDS CAREER-HIGH •17 Points at UCSB Junior Cornel Williams scored a career-high 17 points last Thursday at UC Santa Barbara, adding five rebounds in 26 minutes. Williams was 3-of-4 from three-point range. Saturday at Cal Poly he had four points and six boards. On December 29th vs. Bucknell he recorded a career-best 11 rebounds. Williams is averaging 6.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game this year. In his last six games he is averaging 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Against Washington he had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. In the win over USF he had eight points and six rebounds.
PORTER SHOWS CONSISTENCY •18 Points vs. San Francisco Redshirt freshman Darnell Porter had a big outing against San Francisco as he scored a career-high 18 points. Porter also added five rebounds and three assists. He was three-of-four from three-point range for the game. His three assists and 31 minutes played also represented career-high's for him. Porter had a strong game against California, finishing with 10 points, seven rebounds and a career-best four assists. Thursday at UCSB he had seven points and a career-best eight rebounds. Porter is averaging 7.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game this season and leads the team with 18 steals. In his last five outings he is averaging 10.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He has hit double digits in scoring four times this season (18 vs. USF, 12 at Washington, 10 at Cal, 10 at Pepperdine).
PLATER A SCORING THREAT •Double Digits in 3 of Last 4 Games Freshman Greg Plater is averaging 6.9 points per game this season, but he has hit in double digits in three of the last four games. Plater tallied 15 points at California and followed that up with 13 points against Bucknell. After not scoring at UCSB, he had 12 points off the bench at Cal Poly. Altogether he is averaging 10.0 points per game in his last four games. Toss out the UCSB game and he's averaging 13.3 points per outing. Plater has hit double digits four times this season, with his career-high of 21 points coming on November 21 at Pepperdine. Plater is shooting .346 (18-52) from three-point range. The school-record for three-pointers made by a 49er freshman is 36, set by Jibril Hodges in the 2002-03 season.
