SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly shot a season-best .810 (17-21) at the free throw line as they defeat Long Beach State 64-52 on Saturday evening at Mott Gym in a Big West Conference game. The 49ers, who were led by 15 points and eight assists from Donovan Morris, fell to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in league action. Cal Poly improved to 6-8 and 1-1 in Big West play.
Greg Plater added 12 points off the bench for the 49ers while Darnell Porter scored nine points, all in the first half. Long Beach shot .405 from the field and out-rebounded Cal Poly 34-to-29, but the 49ers had 22 turnovers which the Mustangs turned into 23 points. Cornel Williams and Morris both grabbed six boards to lead the 49ers.
Cal Poly took control of the contest midway through the second half, jumping to a 51-38 lead with 7:51 remaining. Long Beach would get no closer than nine points the remainder of the game.
Lorenzo Keeler led the Mustangs with 14 points, Dawin Whiten and Chaz Thomas both had 11 points and Titus Shelton added 10. The Mustangs shot .400 (22-55) from the field for the game, but committed just 10 turnovers.
In a slow moving first half, Cal Poly scored the final four points at the free throw line to take a 30-25 lead into the lockerroom. Long Beach shot. 455 (10-22) from the field and limited the Mustangs to a .357 (10-28) percentage. Cal Poly took advantage of 10 49er turnovers and converted those into 10 points The Mustangs also were 8-of-10 at the free throw line in the half. Cal Poly led 12-5 at the 14:31 mark only to see the 49ers use a 9-1 run to take a 14-13 lead at 8:27 after two Morris free throws. Morris and Porter both had nine first half points for the 49ers. Hanson tallied eight points in the opening stanza for Cal Poly.
Long Beach will be at home on Thursday, January 10 when they host Pacific at 7 pm in the Walter Pyramid.
