Phone-a-Thon Generates $90,000 with First Try
49er Athletic Teams Reach Out to Donors to Help Fund Programs

LONG BEACH-- The first annual Long Beach State Student-Athlete Phone-a-Thon generated over $90,000 from former student-athletes, parents, alumni and other fans of the program.

The process began when the 49er Athletic Club compiled a list of former athlete names for each of its varsity sports, creating one, large athletics department database. The list was further expanded when each current student-athlete submitted names of potential donors from their own network of family, friends and supporters.

With the help of the 49er Athletic Club and staff member Wayne Stickney, each team called potential donors on a couple of week nights in the Walter Pyramid's Ukleja Room.

"Our goal was to make this a fun environment for the student-athletes and teach them about fundraising," said Stickney. "I am extremely excited about the overall effort and outcome. We far exceeded our financial goal and still have a few teams to go."

The primary purpose of the Student-Athlete Phone-A-Thon is to help each team raise additional dollars to enhance their operational, travel and recruiting budgets. These additional funds are critical to the teams and assist them in their efforts to remain competitive.

"Colleges across the country are raising money in similar ways and I am very pleased with how our coaches and student-athletes embraced the Phone-A-Thon," said Director of Athletics Vic Cegles. "Unfortunately, this was the first time we have reached out to many of our former athletes, but their response and support are an indication that we are well on our way to bringing them back to the Long Beach State Athletics family. I want to thank all the donors and look forward to our teams improved performance as a result."
