THE RECORDS •49ers Lone Game At UC Riverside •Beach Defeats UC Davis Long Beach State improved to 4-11 overall and 1-3 in the Big West after a 71-53 win over UC Davis this past Saturday at the Walter Pyramid. The victory snapped a five-game losing skid. Saturday the 49ers travel to UC Riverside for their lone game of the week. UCR is 3-11 overall and 0-3 in the Big West. The Highlanders will host Cal State Northridge on Wednesday evening.
THE COACH •Dan Monson Enters First Year At Long Beach •Career Record Of 174-134 In 10 Years Dan Monson (Idaho ‘85) is 4-11 (.267) in his first season as the head coach at Long Beach State. Monson has compiled a 174-134 (.565) record his 11th year as a Division I head coach. He was 52-17 (.754) in two years at Gonzaga, leading the Bulldogs to the Elite Eight in 1999. In eight years at Minnesota he compiled a 118-106 (.527) mark with five post-season appearances.
THE SERIES •LBSU Leads UC Riverside, 21-6 The 49ers lead their series with UC Riverside by a 21-6 margin. The 49ers have won the last five meetings with the Highlanders. Last year Long Beach won 99-65 at home and 91-75 at UCR. The 49ers have won the last two meetings at Riverside and are 8-3 all-time on the road against UCR.
49ERS DEFEAT UC DAVIS •Plater Scores 18 In Victory Greg Plater tallied 18 points and got the 49ers going offensively at the start of the game as Long Beach led wire-to-wire in defeating UC Davis 71-53 on Saturday. Donovan Morris tallied 20 points, Cornel Williams 13 and Brandon Johnson had a career-best 14 points. Long Beach shot .540 (27-50) from the field and out-rebounded the Aggies 31-to-20. Plater scored 11 of the 49ers first 16 points in the game as Long Beach jumped to a 17-8 lead in the opening six-plus minutes of the contest. Leading 38-30 with 16:35 left in the contest, the 49ers put the game away with a 19-5 run, grabbing a 56-35 advantage with 9:01 left.
BEACH FALLS TO PACIFIC •Morris Scores Career-Best 32 Points Donovan Morris scored a career-high 32 points and Darnell Porter added 15 points and seven rebounds, but Pacific had all five starters score in double figures and came away with an 83-77 win over the 49ers on Thursday night. Trailing 33-32 at the half, the 49ers opened the second half with a 8-3 run to take a 40-36 lead. From there Pacific went on an 18-0 run to take a 54-40 lead with 11:25 remaining. Long Beach pulled to within 66-62 with 2:55 remaining, but Pacific hit 13-of-16 free throws in the final 1:14 to secure the win. The 49ers shot .531 (26-49) from the field, their second-best performance of the season, and were 17-20 at the free throw line.
UC RIVERSIDE FACTS •Highlanders 3-11 On Season UC Riverside is 3-11 overall and 0-3 in the Big West and will host Cal State Northridge on Wednesday before the 49ers come calling on Saturday. UCR last played on January 7th, falling at home to Cal State Fullerton 77-47. In that game Cleavon Barlow led the way with 11 points. The Highlanders have not won since an 86-74 overtime home win over LMU on December 15. They have lost five games in a row. On the year senior Larry Cunningham is the lone player in double digits, averaging 14.7 points per game. Sean Cunningham checks in at 8.9 points per game and a team-high 4.5 rebounds per contest. UCR is averaging 56.4 points per game and shooting .399 from the field. Opponents are averaging 68.6 points and shooting .456.
BIG WEST STATISTICS •Beach 2nd in Free Throw Percentage In the latest Big West Conference statistics the 49ers are second in the league in free throw shooting at .740 and fourth in field goal percentage defense at .439. Long Beach also ranks in the top four in the league in rebounding (4th), rebound margin (4th), 3-point field goal percentage defense (.351), 3-point field goal percentage (4th), assists (4th), offensive rebounds (3rd) and defensive rebounds (4th). Individually, Donovan Morris is 1st in minutes played (37.40), 3rd in scoring (18.2 ppg), 4th in free throw percentage (.827), 3rd in 3-point percentage (.484), 6th in defensive rebounds (4.13 rpg), 13th in rebounding (5.3 rpg), 7th in 3-pointers made (2.07 pg) and 6th in field goal percentage (.511). In conference only games he ranks second in scoring at 21.5 points per game.
STRONG SHOOTING AT HOME •4-2 on the Season at Walter Pyramid In the last four outings at home the 49ers have shot over .500 from the field in each contest and have averaged 74.0 points per game. The 49ers have shot .530 (106-200) from the field overall in those four games and .444 (32-72) from 3-point range. The 49ers shot .531 (26-49) from the field on Thursday against Pacific and followed that with a .540 (27-50) effort on Saturday in the win over UC Davis. Their best field goal percentage game of the season came on December 18 vs. San Francisco as Long Beach shot .556 (25-45) from the field.
IRON MAN •Morris Leads Big West In Minutes Junior Donovan Morris has been an "Iron Man" for the 49ers this season. He leads the team, and the Big West Conference, averaging 37.4 minutes played per game. He played all 45 minutes in the 49ers overtime game at Pepperdine and at Hawai'i and at UCSB he played all 40 minutes. All-together, he has been on the court for 561 of the 49ers 610 minutes of action this season (.920).
FREE THROW SHOOTING •Season-Best .917 at Hawai'i The 49ers are shooting .740 at the free throw line this season, a mark which ranks second in the Big West Conference. Long Beach shot a season-best .917 (11-12) at Hawai'i. The 49ers have shot .800 or better at the line in five of its last eight games. In its last eight outings the 49ers are shooting .782 (86-110) at the charity stripe. In the six home contests the 49ers are shooting .781 (82-105) at the line. Individually, Donovan Morris is shooting .854 (35-41) from the line in the past 10 games.
STRONG ALL-AROUND GAME •Held UC Davis to 53 points The 49ers had their best all-around game in Saturday's 71-53 win over UC Davis. Long Beach shot .540 from the field for the game, its second-best shooting performance of the year, and limited the Aggies to just 53 points, the second-lowest point total allowed this year (52 points to St. Louis and LMU). The 49ers also out-rebounded the Aggies 31-to-20, the seventh time this year the 49ers have out-rebounded an opponent.
MORRIS CONTINUES SCORING STREAK •Career-High 32 Points vs. Pacific Junior guard Donovan Morris continues to be the 49ers top scoring threat this season. He leads the squad in scoring at 18.2 points per game, having hit double digits in 14 consecutive contests. Morris also is the 49ers leading rebounder at 5.4 boards per game. Thursday night in the loss to Pacific he scored a career-high 32 points, hitting 10-of-15 shots from the field. He tallied a team-high 20 points in Saturday's win over UC Davis. Morris has seven games with 20 or more points this year. Morris was named the Big West Player of the Week on December 24 after he recorded a then-career-high 26 points in the 49ers 71-68 win over San Francisco. Morris is shooting .511 overall from the field, .484 (31-64) from three-point range and .827 (62-75) at the free throw line. Toss out his opening game vs. BYU (1-15 FG, 0-4 3-pt) and Morris is shooting .553 (89-161) overall and .517 (31-60) from three-point range.
GALLOW STEPS UP •Career-High 8 Points at UCSB Junior Brice Gallow continues to improve as the season progresses. He had a career-high eight points at UCSB, adding a rebound and an assist. At Cal Poly he played a then career-best 25 minutes finishing with four points. Gallow had played a total of just 20 minutes spanning the previous six games heading into that weekend and had scored a total of two points. Thursday against Pacific he had four points and an assist in 13 minutes of action in his first game as a starter. Saturday vs. Davis he had career-high's with six rebounds, three steals, two assists and 27 minutes played. Gallow is averaging 1.8 points per game this season.
WILLIAMS RECORDS CAREER-HIGH •17 Points at UCSB Junior Cornel Williams scored a career-high 17 points at UC Santa Barbara, adding five rebounds in 26 minutes. Williams was 3-of-4 from three-point range. In Saturday's win over UC Davis he had 13 points and five rebounds in the 49er victory. Thursday against Pacific he had 11 points and three rebounds. Williams is averaging 7.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game this year. In his last four games he has hit double digits in scoring three times and is averaging 11.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Williams has also been hot from three-point range knocking down nine of his last 15 attempts (.600) in the past four outings while shooting .640 (16-25) overall during that span. He grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in the game against Bucknell and against Washington he had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. He has hit double digits in scoring four times this season.
JOHNSON GARNERS CAREER-HIGH •14 Points vs. UC Davis Junior Brandon Johnson had a strong outing in Saturday's win over UC Davis. Johnson, whose previous high in points this season was nine (vs. Washington and Montana State), scored a career-high 14 points off the bench while grabbing five rebounds in 17 minutes. Johnson was 6-of-8 from the field and hit both of his free throw attempts. Johnson had scored just nine points in his previous six games. On the year he is averaging 4.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. He is one of three players on the team with more assists (12) than turnovers (9).
PLATER PUTTING UP SOME NUMBERS •Double Digits in 4 of Last 6 Games Freshman Greg Plater came up big on Saturday vs. UC Davis scoring 18 points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists. Plater was 7-of-10 from the field and hit three of his five three-pointers. Plater is averaging 7.3 points per game this season, but he has hit in double digits in four of the last six games. Plater tallied 15 points at California and followed that up with 13 points against Bucknell. After not scoring at UCSB, he had 12 points off the bench at Cal Poly. Plater has hit double digits five times this season, with his career-high of 21 points coming on November 21 at Pepperdine. Plater is shooting .362 (21-58) from three-point range. The school-record for three-pointers made by a 49er freshman is 36, set by Jibril Hodges in the 2002-03 season.
CLADY SHINES VS. PACIFIC •8 Points and 4 Assists vs. Tigers Junior Maurice Clady had a strong showing on Thursday against Pacific, finishing with eight points and four assists in 28 minutes. He also had just two turnovers. In the two games last weekend on the Central Coast Clady had 12 turnovers and eight assists. On the year he is averaging 3.6 points per game and has 32 assists to 31 turnovers. He is one of just three 49ers with more assists than turnovers. Clady had a big game in the home win over Loyola Marymount on December 5 finishing with a career-high 10 points and seven rebounds. Clady is shooting .435 (10-23) from three-point range and .833 (10-12) at the free throw line this season, having his hit last eight charity tosses.
