49ers Down Florida State In Three Games LONG BEACH – Taking care of the ball on offense and utilizing mistakes by the Seminoles, Long Beach State came away with a convincing 30-22, 30-28, 30-23 win Saturday night in the Walter Pyramid over Florida State. Alexis Crimes led the 49ers with 14 kills on .542 hitting and nine digs. The Beach came out with a solid attack, hitting .287 and made only 12 attack errors on the entire match. That contrasted greatly with the Seminoles, who had 26 attack errors and 12 service errors to help out Long Beach State. Defensive highlights came from libero Cynthia Buggs, who made a career high 17 digs in the three-game match, as well as Quincy Verdin who had a career high two aces to go along with 9 kills. Long Beach State went to Crimes to start, and after two overpass kills the Beach moved out to a 4-0 lead. From there, the team moved out to a 9-2 edge, taking advantage of Florida State service errors. The Seminoles moved back to within four, but the 49ers continued to press and quickly moved back out to a seven-point lead at 16-9. Florida State had a number of problems serving, giving up five service errors before taking their first timeout at 18-10. Long Beach State continued to hold the momentum though, scoring four straight points following a couple of Vargas kills, and grabbed a 30-22. Florida State opened up an early 2-0 start in game two, but another service error keyed a small Long Beach State run and the 49ers regained the lead. Neither team was able to gain a toehold though, and the teams moved through a very tight game early. Finally, Florida State capitalized on a pair of Lauren Richardson aces and rallied to take a 14-10 lead. Long Beach State recovered, and tied the match at 16 on the way to a 19-18 lead. The Seminoles rebounded out to a two point edge, and held there until a Hasalikova kill on a long rally finally retied the game at 24. From there, Long Beach State grabbed the sideout edge at 26-25, and a Mira Djuric attack error finally handed the Beach the point they needed for a 30-28 win. Florida State grabbed a service ace to start the game, but Long Beach State opened the early lead with a 6-4 advantage. With the game tied at 8-8, the 49ers took advantage of strong serving by Quincy Verdin and scored four straight points to gain the game's momentum. The 49ers moved out to a six-point lead, but Florida State brought the game to within two at 18-16. Long Beach State picked the tempo back up, though, and with a four-point cushion moved on to a 30-23 final game win. Long Beach State now heads to the road for two straight weeks. First up is a trip to Denver, Colo., where the team will participate in the four-team Pioneer Classic. Then the team opens Big West play on the road at Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara before returning to Long Beach for two on September 28 and 29.
