49ers Finish In 10th Place At Adams Cup
Katnik finishes tournament in seventh place

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The 49er men's golf team completed their east coast road trip to Rhode Island, finishing in a tie for 10th place at the 14th annual Adams Cup of Newport/Cleveland Golf Classic as LBSU shot a 306 in the third and final round for a total of 920 at the Newport National Golf Club. Wichita State won the team title with a score of 890, followed by Southern Mississippi at 901.

Individually, sophomore Karl Katnik moved up in the standings from 11th place after day one to finishing tied for seventh place in the tournament after shooting a two-over 74 in the final round with a score of 223 (74-75-76). Freshman Eric Pitcaithley moved up two spots as he finished in a tie for 30th place as he shot a 230 (73-75-74) and sophomore Michael Drake finished tied for 36th place with a 232 (73-81-78). Freshman Ricky Montanez completed the tournament in a tie for 53rd place with a score of 238 (77-80-81) and Issei Suenaga finished tied for 73rd. Chris Gold of Maryland captured the individual title as he shot a one-under in the final round to finish with at 218 (74-73-71).

"The first round was very encouraging when we were in second place, proving that we could play with all these teams," said Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "Then in the final round everybody improved. We talked after the second round about grinding it out and saving shots whenver possible and everyone improved for the third round, so that was a good sign."

The 49ers will next be in action as they travel to Reno, Nev. for the Nevada Wolfpack Classic on Monday, Oct. 8 and Tuesday, Oct. 9.
