FIRST TEE: Long Beach State travels to the east coast as they make their first appearance in the 14th annual Adams Cup of Newport/Cleveland Golf Classic at the Orchard Course at Newport National Golf Club in Newport, R.I. ... the two-day tournament begins on Tuesday, Sept. 25 with two rounds of play and the final round being played on Wednesday, Sept. 26 ... the Orchard Course at Newport National is par-72, 7,244-yard course designed by legendary course architect Arthur Hills ... the 2007 field features 15 teams: Brown, Connecticut, Francis Marion, Furman, Georgetown, Long Beach State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Maryland, Pacific, Rhode Island, South Carolina-Aiken, Southern Mississippi, Texas-San Antonio, Wichita State and Yale ... for live action of the Adams Cup, log on to golfstat.com.
TAKE US BACK EAST: The Beach travel squad to Rhode Island will feature sophomore's Michael Drake and Karl Katnik and freshman Ricky Montanez, Issei Suenaga and Eric Pitcaithley ... this will be Pitcaithley's first collegiate tournament appearance.
COACH LIVINGSTONE ON ADAMS CUP: "We are really looking forward to this event. In our final round of qualifying for the trip we shot 11 under par, which is as low as I can ever remember for us at Virginia CC. My only concern is the time difference, but that is one reason we usually take a trip back east is to get used to that travel in case we get shipped east for the Regionals.."
BEACH COMPLETES FIRST TOURANMENT: The 49ers finished in 12th place at the Saint Mary's Invitational in Pebble Beach, Calif., shooting a 902 over three rounds of play ... it was their first tournament of the 2007-08 campaign ... after the first day of action, The Beach found themselves tied for eighth place with Colorado after finishing with a score of 300 in the first round.
DRAKE FINISHES IN SIXTH; FRESHMAN MAKE THEIR DEBUT: Sophomore Michael Drake finished the first tournament of the 2007-08 season tied for sixth place after shooting a one-over 217 (71-72-74) ... Drake finished three shots behind tournament champion Wesley Williams of Baylor who totaled a 214 (71-70-73) ... Drake is tied for fourth place after shooting a one-under 143 (71-72) ... Freshman Ricky Montanez and Issei Suenaga made their first collegiate tournament debut at the Saint Mary's Invitational ... Montanez finished tied at 57th with a score of 230 and Suenaga finished at 91st.
ABOUT THE HEAD COACH: Bob Livingstone, a 1988 graduate of Long Beach State with a Bachelors Degree in Finance, is entering his 14th year as the Head Coach of the 49er men's golf program. After graduating, Livingstone was hired as the Executive Director of the Southern California PGA's Junior Golf Association. He served in that capacity for six years and upon his departure for Long Beach State his commitment and service were recognized when he received the Bill Bryant Award for "Outstanding and Distinguished Service to Junior Golf". In 2000, he was named Big West Coach of the Year after his team qualified for the NCAA playoffs for the first time in 18 years, and the 2004 team won its first Big West Conference Championship in over 30 years.
