49ers Win St. John's Tournament Opener JAMAICA, N.Y. – Long Beach State went to the road and came away with their first win of the season, a convincing 30-22, 30-25, 30-28 win over Fairfield. Senior Alexis Crimes again led the 49ers with 15 kills, but four players finished with double-figures in kills as the team easily dispatched the Stags. Crimes particularly had strong attacking figures on Friday. She hit .565 in the three games, making 15 kills on 23 attacks with two errors. Quincy Verdin at 13 kills, Ashley Lee had 12 and Michaela Hasalikova had 11 to provide the bulk of the remaining offense, as Long Beach State hit .364, their highest mark on the year. Lee also provided help defensively, finishing with 11 digs for her first double-double of her career. Also picking up a double-double was junior setter Nicole Vargas, who had 11 digs to go along with 45 assists. She also helped offensively, making five kills and hitting .444. The closest game in hitting came in the first game, as Fairfield hit .233 to stay close to Long Beach State's .366 clip in the opening game, but Quincy Verdin had seven kills to help the 49ers overcome what was a close game with a strong run at the end of the game, as the team took six of the last seven points to close out the game. The Beach took game two upon themselves to win, pounding out 21 kills themselves and capitalizing on four Fairfield errors as the team easily took game two behind seven kills from Crimes. Game three was the closest in points, but Long Beach State held the Stags to .032 hitting in the final game, and made 18 kills to pick up the team's first win on the season. The 49ers improve to 1-2 on the year, while Fairfield stays winless at 0-6. Two more games await Long Beach State during their stay in New York.
