New York State Of Mind The Beach gears up for its first road trip of the season, where the team will participate in the St. John's Tournament hosted by the Red Storm in Jamaica, N.Y. this weekend. Long Beach State opens up with Fairfield on Friday afternoon, and will then play two matches against Virginia Tech and St. John's on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Pacific respectively. Hear it, See it There will be no radio coverage for the first two games in the weekend, but an internet broadcast will be available for the third match of the weekend against St. John's thanks to the St. John's Communications department. Both of next week's home matches will be streamed at www.longbeachstate.com as well. The first television match of the year will be on October 20, when the 49ers play Cal Poly. That match can be seen nationally on CSTV. Tournament Action This weekend is the first of many this year where the team will participate in tournament play. Next week's matches against Florida State and Washington at home also include a Friday match between the two opponents to fill a round-robin. Following that, the team travels to Denver for the Pioneer Classic against No. 23 Ohio, Washington State and host Denver. The team will also host the Baden Thanksgiving Classic in the Walter Pyramid, holding eight matches in two days on Nov. 23 and Nov. 24. Finally, the team will try to make their 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament, which begins on Nov. 29 this year. Ms. Lawlor Goes To Washington Starting setter Dyanne Lawlor has left the program, but with only the greatest excitement to take a position in the White House in Washington D.C. A 2006 psychology graduate, Lawlor was working on her master's degree in political science while finishing the last year of her eligibility with the team. A three-time Academic All-Big West selection, Lawlor is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and plans to work either in politics or law. She finishes her career with 1126 assists, 368 kills and 73 aces. Nicole Vargas will return to the lineup as the setter, where she earned All-Big West honors last season.
