Rojo Named Assistant

Rojo Hired to be Team's Second Assistant LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State Baseball announced the hiring of Andy Rojo, 33, the former Associate Head Coach from state champion, Riverside Community College, as its assistant coach. RCC won the state championship this past season behind a 37-18 record, after reaching the Super Regionals behind a 36-14 record in 2006. In six combined seasons at his alma mater, RCC went 189-85 (.690). The Tigers have gone 115-61 (.653) over the last four seasons, as Rojo has served as the program's first full-time recruiting coordinator.He previously was an assistant at RCC in 1997 and 1998, helping the Tigers win league in 1998, as the team went 37-22 both years. "I consider Andy one of the brightest, young, up and coming coaches in the business," said Head Coach Mike Weathers, whose team went 39-20 last season, and reached the Regional Championship game for the fourth time in six seasons. "He will bring in some new ideas and make our program even stronger." Two of the last three recruiting classes were ranked No. 1 in the California, with the Class of 2007 receiving a No. 2 national ranking. One of his former recruits is current Dirtbag centerfielder Chris Nelson. He also spearheaded the program's fist alumni golf tournament. In four years, 18 players were named all-conference for the Tigers, as the program also produced the Orange Empire Conference's MVP (2007) and Pitcher of the Year (2006). Rojo finished up his playing career at Cal Poly Pomona in 1996 as an all-conference performer, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in History, after spending the 1995 season at the University of Florida as a reserve infielder. As a starter during his sophomore season at RCC in 1994, he earned second team All-OEC honors and earned the team's Golden Glove Award. He was also named the school's Male Student-Athlete of the Year. He was a backup as a freshman. He made the Dean's List all four semesters. A1992 graduate of Etiwanda High School, he was a two-year letterwinner and team MVP as a senior. He and his wife, Leslie, currently reside in Rancho Cucamonga. |
