All-Big West Team Announced

Dirtbags Earn Three on the First Team FULL ALL-BIG WEST TEAM (PDF) IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State catcher Travis Howell, outfielder Robert Perry and designated hitter Shane Peterson were all named first team All-Big West by the conferences coaches, to highlight six Dirtbags on the all-conference team. Second baseman Matt Cline and shortstop Danny Espinosa were second team selections, while righthander Andrew Liebel and outfielder TJ Mittelstaedt were honorable mention selections. Perry and Peterson, both second team selections last year, moved up to the first team. Peterson enters the Long Beach Regional at Blair Field on Friday batting a team-best .344, driving in 40 runs while also putting forth a 22-game hit streak during the season. Peterson also has 10 steals and is slugging at a .503 clip. Perry, a career .300 hitter in four Division-I seasons at LBSU and Santa Clara, was named to an all-conference team for the third team. He was an honorable mention All-West Coast Confererence pick in 2004. Perry leads the club with 50 RBIs and 47 runs while batting .330. Howell, a reserve his last two years at Cal, has blossomed at The Beach, batting .310 with 24 RBIs. Espinosa, last year's Big West Freshman of the Year, was named to the second team after batting .318 overall with seven home runs and 36 RBIs. Cline, a senior, earns his first selection, batting .332 with 35 runs and 25 RBIs, while ranking amongst the nation's leaders in hit by pitches (17) and sacrifice bunts (17). Liebel went 8-3 with a 2.83 ERA over 24 appearances and five starts. This is also the first award for the junior, who has started the last five games for The Beach (going 3-1), after 54 career relief appearances. Mittelstaedt, a freshman, is batting .296 this season, with a team-best 32 walks and .473 on-base percentage. |
