Long Beach Wins Black & Blue Rivalry Series Beach Wins Second In A Row May 16, 2007
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State was officially declared the winner of the 2006-07 Black and Blue Rivalry Series with UC Irvine for the second year in a row by a final count of 29-23. The final trophy results included this past weekend's Big West Track and Field Championships. Long Beach State also won the inaugural trophy last season by a count of 34-25.
The series, presented and sponsored by Duke's of Huntington Beach, focuses on head-to-head match-ups between the two schools during the regular season and post-season.
This year the 49ers recorded 10 head-to-head victories over the Anteaters while finishing ahead of UCI in three of the six conference championship match-ups. The 49er women's basketball team recorded three wins over UCI this year, including a 76-64 victory in the Big West Tournament. The men's basketball, women's volleyball and men's water polo teams all recorded two victories over the Anteaters as well.
Long Beach held a 25-11 lead in the series after the conference basketball tournament, but the Anteaters gained ground in the spring winning the next six events to pull to within 25-23. The 49ers sealed the victory at the conference track & field championships as both the 49er men and women finished ahead of the Anteaters in the final standings.
The trophy was created to build the rivalry between UC Irvine and Long Beach State in all sports, to increase attendance at events between the two schools and to build school spirit among each institution's student body.
Each year at the conclusion of the final scheduled athletic event between the two institutions, the winning school will receive a surfboard trophy bearing the inscription of the annual winners as well as a party for the athletic department at Duke's. The winning institution will retain possession of the trophy for a period of one year, until the award presentation the following year.
