Kwong Earns Weekly Award for Second Time NATIONAL RANKINGS LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State thrower Ezra Kwong (Novato) was named the Big West Conference's Field Athlete of the Week for the second-time this season after firing off personal-high's of 174'10" in the discus and 57'7.75" in the shot put at last week's UC San Diego Triton Invitational. Kwong, already a regional qualifier in both disciplines, moved up to No. 4 all-time in the shot put, following the toss. Kwong ranks 35th nationally in the shot and 50th in the discus. Kwong along with conference discus leader, Robert Jennings (Campbell), are one of a half dozen favorites to win gold at next month's Big West Championships for the 49ers. The Beach are headed to UC Irvine's Steve Scott Invitational this Friday and Saturday. Jennings, who holds the fourth-longest hammer toss in school-history this season, as well as the seventh-longest discus throw, ranks 21st nationally in the discus and 40th in the hammer. Jennings leads the Big West in the discus, while Kwong is second. Brent Gray (El Cajon) is a two-time regional qualifer in the sprints, leading the Big West and the West Regional, while ranking 11th overall in the 100-meter dash with a school-record 10.29 time. He holds the second-fastest 200-meter time, which is 20th nationally, tops in the conference and fourth in the region. This past weekend he qualified for the conference 400-meter, the first time he has run it as a Division-I transfer from Cerritos College. During the indoor season, he was named All-MPSF in the 200-meter and set school-records in the 100 and 200-meter races during the winter. On the women's side, Jill Reynolds (Castaic) ranks 13th nationally in the pole vault, with a regional qualifier and second-best mark in LBSU history at 13'1.50". She is 10th in the West and first in the conference. Defending conference champion, Kim Heinz (Florence, MT), ranks atop the Big West for the second-straight year with a school-record 166'6" mark, posting the 13th-longest toss in the nation this season. Sophomore Alex Shaw (Milwaukie, OR) is 24th in the nation in the javelin, and holds the third-longest toss in school-history (158'4"). Also in the throws, Jennifer Onyeagbako (Sparks, NV), is a regional qualifier in the discus with the 16th-best national mark (171'1"), while leading the Big West and ranking second all-time. Onyeagbako also has a top-10 mark in the hammer (170'6") after having the No. 7 mark in the indoor shot and No. 2 mark in the indoor weight during the winter. |
