Hoey & Lederer Win Big West Titles
Beach Women Finish 2nd, Men 5th
April 24, 2007
RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA-- It was a banner day individually for the
Long Beach State men's and women's golf programs as both Kay Hoey and
Brett Lederer were overall individual medalists at the 2007 Big West Conference
Golf Championships at Tijeras Creek Golf Course in Rancho Santa Margarita.
It is just the fifth time in 21 years that a school has claimed the individual
title on both the men's and women's sides, and the first since 2002.
As a team, the 49er women finished in second place with a 920, trailing
first place UC Irvine by 28 strokes. The 49ers shot an impressive 302
in Tuesday's final round. The 49er men shot a 288 on Tuesday and finished
in fifth place with a score of 878. UC Irvine won the men's team title
with a score of 852.
Hoey, who is ranked No. 16 in the latest Golfstat Collegiate Women's Rankings,
shot a one-under 71 in Tuesday's third and final round to finish at one-under
215 (71-73-71). She edged out UC Irvine's Patty Chawalitmetha who shot
an even par 216 (73-66-77) for the tournament, but finished with a five-over
77 on Tuesday. UCI's Selanee' Henderson finished three shots back at two-over
218 (72-73-73). The 49ers had three golfers finish in the top eight this
year. Senior Beth Holtermann shot a 230 (75-78-77) to finish in sixth
place overall and freshman Brenda Chhuor shot a 232 (79-74-79) to finish
in eighth place.
Hoey won her fourth tournament title this year and her seventh in her
49er career. Last year finished third at the league championships and
in 2005 as a freshman she was fifth. Hoey also was honored by being named
the Big West's Women's Golfer of the Year for the second time. In 2005
she also captured that honor. Holtermann and Katy Barrett were selected
second team All-Big West.
On the men's side, Lederer shot a three-under 69 on Tuesday and finished
the tournament with a 12-under 204 (65-70-69) to win his first individual
title at Long Beach State. His previous best finish was a second place
showing to the 2004 Western Intercollegiate. Lederer won the tournament
by five shots over his closest competitor, Cal Poly's Colin Peck, who
shot a seven-under 209 (70-69-70). Freshman Michael Drake tied for 21st
place with an eight-over 224 (81-73-70), but he concluded the tournament
on a high note by shooting a two-under 70 in Tuesday's final round. Senior
Ryan Wood finished 28th with a 226 (72-77-77), freshman Karl Katnik fied
for 29th at 227 (79-74-74) and senior Nick Badel tied for 34th place with
a 233 (80-78-75).
The individual title was the third in the past four years for a 49er men's
golfer and the eighth overall. Ryan Panichpakdee won the 2006 title with
a record-breaking score of 200 and Todd Saukkola won the 2004 title on
a playoff.
"Brett has had a few opportunities to win each of the last three
years," said 49er Head Men's Coach Bob Livingstone. "It is just
so great for him to come through and get a "W" in his last college
event. He played just great during the whole tournament, but really stepped
up today when it got close, making three straight birdies at #14, #15
and #16 to wrap it up."
For his efforts, Lederer was selected first team All-Big West Conference
for the second time in his 49er career (first in 2004). Drake was named
to the all-conference second team.
