RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA-- After two rounds of the 2007 Big West Conference Golf Championships the Long Beach State women's team stands in second place while the 49er men are in fifth. The tournament is being held at Tijeras Creek Golf Course in Rancho Santa Margarita.

The 49er women shot a 618 over two rounds and trail first place UC Irvine by 27 strokes. Long Beach shot a 311 and followed that with an impressive 307. UCI shot a 300 in Monday's opening round and followed that up with a 291 for a 591. On the men's side, the 49ers shot a 296 in the first round and a 294 in the second for a score of 590. UC Irvine is in first place on the men's side after shooting a 14-under 562 (272-290).

Long Beach State junior Kay Hoey is currently in third place after shooting an even par 144 (71-73). Hoey, who is ranked No. 16 in the latest Golfstat Collegiate Women's Rankings, is a two-time first team All-Big West Conference selection and finihsed third at the 2006 Championships and 5th in 2005. Freshman Brenda Chhuor and senior Beth Holtermann are both tied for ninth place after shooting a nine-over 153. Chhuor shot a 79 in her first round, but followed that up with a solid two-over 74 in the second. Holtermann shot a 75 in her opening round and a 78 in round two. The overall leader is UC Irvine's Patty Chawalitmetha who shot a five-under 139 (73-66). UC Davis' Sydney Roughton stands in second place with a one-under 143 (69-74).

On the men's side, senior Brett Lederer shot a nine-under 135 (65-70) and is tied for first place with UC Irvine's John Chin (65-70). Lederer shot a seven-under 65 in Monday's morning round and followed that up with a two-under 70 in the afternoon. Lederer is a three-time all-conference selection and has two Top Ten finishes at the conference tournament over his three years (T7th in 2004, T4th in 2005). Cal Poly's Colin Peck stands in third place, four shots back at 139 (70-69). LBSU senior Ryan Wood is in 19th place with a five-over 149 (72-77) and freshman Karl Katnik is tied for 27th place with a 153 (79-74). Fellow freshman Michael Drake is tied for 30th place with a 154 (81-73). After a tough morning for both Katnik and Drake, the freshmen settled down to shoot a respective 74 and 73 in round two.

"What a great day for Brett," said 49er Men's Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "He played and putted well in the morning, and actually hit it much better in the afternoon, but the greens got dry and bumpy, and he missed a few short birdie putts. I think this tournament is his to win, and what a great cap that would be to his career as a 49er!"

The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
