Peterson and Shaw Sweep Weekly Awards

Sophomores Sweep Conference Awards IRVINE, CA--Sophomores Shane Peterson (Temecula) and Bryan Shaw (Pleasanton) swept the Big West Conference's Player and Pitcher of the Week awards following Long Beach State's five-game sweep last week over Pepperdine and CS Northridge. Peterson, a second team All-Big West pick as a utility player, solidified his status for 2007, pitching five strong innings in a win over the Matadors on Friday and batted .562 for the week (9-for-16) with eight RBIs and four runs. Peterson's two-run single won the team's first game over Pepperdine, before his double tied game two. Peterson, who began the year in a 3-for-38 slide is now batting .278 with 16 RBIs and enters the week on a nine-game hitting streak. Shaw, who earned his first award on February 12, picked up the win with three shutout innings against Pepperdine, retiring the final 12 batters, while also picking up the save in the series clincher on Saturday against CSUN. Shaw ranks in the the national top-50 with six saves as he enters the week with a 4-2 record and 1.78 ERA. The Dirtbags (21-12), who moved up to No. 25 in the Coaches Poll, host Loyola Marymount on Tuesday and UC Davis this weekend. |
