THE RECORDS •49ers Looking For First Road Conference Win Long Beach State is 15-6 overall and 6-2 in the Big West Conference. The 49ers swept two games at home last week defeating Cal State Northridge 79-72 on Thursday evening and Pacific 92-64 on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid. This week they head to the Central Coast to take on Cal Poly and UCSB. Cal Poly is 11-9 overall and 3-4 in the Big West, while UCSB is 14-6 overall and 5-2 in league play. Saturday's game at UCSB (7 pm) will be televised live on FSN Prime Ticket with Paul Sunderland and Mike Montgomery calling the action.
THE COACH •18-7 Last Two-Plus Seasons In February And March Larry Reynolds (UC Riverside, 1976) is 54-81 (.400) in his fifth year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Overall, Reynolds is 164-116 (.586) in his ninth year as a collegiate head coach. Since February 3, 2005, the 49ers are 18-7 (.720) in the months of February (12-5) and March (6-2).
THE SERIES •49ers Lead Cal Poly Series, 30-25 •49ers Lead UCSB Series, 51-49 The 49ers lead their series with Cal Poly by a 30-25 margin, including a 77-70 win in Long Beach on January 6. The 49ers have won four in a row over the Mustangs. Last year the 49ers won at SLO, 79-66, snapping a five-game losing streak at Mott Gym. The 49ers lead their series with UCSB by a 51-49 margin, including a 101-65 win at Long Beach on January 4. This will be the 101st meeting between the two schools, the longest running series between the 49ers and any opponent. Long Beach has lost its last five games at the Thunderdome.
BEACH ROUTS THE TIGERS •Shoot Season-High .571 From The Field Sterling Byrd tallied 22 points and the 49ers shot a season-best .571 (32-56) from the field en route to a 92-64 win over Pacific on Saturday. Aaron Nixon added 16 points and Kevin Houston had 14 points and five assists. The 49ers had a season-low five turnovers while forcing 16 Pacific miscues. Leading 40-29 at the half, the 49ers used a 16-1 run in the opening four minutes of the second half to take a commanding 56-30 lead. Long Beach shot .654 (17-26) from the field in the second half. Anthony Brown led the Tigers with 18 points. UOP shot .442 (23-52) from the field, but were 7-23 from three-point range.
BEACH DEFEATS THE MATADORS •Byrd Leads Way With 23 Points Sterling Byrd scored 23 points and Dominique Ricks had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, as Long Beach State defeated Cal State Northridge 79-72 on Thursday evening at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers were 27-38 at the free throw line, including hitting seven-of-ten at the charity stripe in the final 3:11 of the game. Byrd was 9-11 at the line and 4-8 from three-point range. Aaron Nixon added 16 points and six assists and Kevin Houston had 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals. Terrell Jones led the Matadors with 16 points. The 49ers out-rebounded CSUN 45-41, led by Ricks' 12, six of which came on the offensive glass.
ESPNU BRACKET BUSTER •49ers To Host Hawai'i Long Beach State drew the University of Hawai'i for its O'Reilly Auto Parts ESPNU Bracket Busters game on February 17 at the Walter Pyramid. Hawai'i is 13-10 on the year and 4-6 in the Western Athletic Conference. The game will be played at 7:05 pm at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers will return a game to Hawai'i next season.
CAL POLY FACTS •Winners Of Five Of Last Six Cal Poly stands at 11-9 overall and 3-4 in the Big West, but the Mustangs have been playing their best basketball as of late having won five of its last six games. On Saturday the Mustangs won at UC Davis 88-64 as Derek Stockalper had a career-high 30 points. Cal Poly shot .542 from the field in the victory and were 13-25 from three-point range. On the year, Stockalper is averaging 12.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Guard Dawin Whiten checks in at 10.9 points per game and Tyler McGinn is also averaging 10.9 points per outing. The Mustangs are averaging 71.4 points per game and shooting.451 from the field. Both Stockalper (37-80) and McGinn (46-100) are shooting .460 or better from three-point range this season. Cal Poly is allowing 70.5 points per game and opponents are shooting .423 from the field.
UCSB FACTS •Gauchos In Second Place UC Santa Barbara is 14-6 overall and in second place in the Big West at 5-2. UCSB has won three games in a row, all on the road (CS Northridge, Pacific, UC Davis). Last Thursday they won at Davis 66-48 as Chris Devine had 19 points and 10 rebounds. On the year, Alex Harris is averaging 20.7 points per game, while Devine adds 15.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. They are the only Gauchos in double digits. As a team, UCSB is averaging 72.3 points per game and shooting .479 from the field. Gaucho opponents are averaging 67.2 points per game and are shooting just .410. UCSB is 9-2 on the road and 5-4 at home.
CENTRAL COAST TRIP •Haven't Swept Trip Since 2000 The annual trip to the Central Coast to play UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly has not been kind to the 49ers. Since Cal Poly joined the league in the 1996-97 season, the 49ers have swept both games only two times (1997, 2000) in 10 trips. Five times the 49ers have been swept on the trip, including four of the past five years. Last year the 49ers lost at UCSB (77-74), but rebounded to win at Cal Poly 79-66, its first win there since March 4, 2000.
OFFENSIVE OUTBURST •49ers Hit 101 Points Vs. UCSB The 49ers hit 100 points for the first time this season, racking up 101 points in the win over UCSB on January 4. Last year the 49ers hit the century mark three times en route to averaging an NCAA-best 83.3 points per game. Long Beach has put up some impressive numbers in Big West Conference play thus far. The 49ers lead the league averaging 88.8 points per game in conference outings. The 49ers have scored 90 or more points in four of their eight league games. Overall the 49ers are averaging 78.0 points per game.
BIG WIN VS. TIGERS •28-Point Win Is Second-Largest Saturday's 28-point win (92-64) over the University of the Pacific was the second-largest ever by a 49er team over the Tigers. The largest margin was a 35-point win (105-70) on January 14, 1988 in the Gold Mine. The win snapped a seven-game losing skid to Pacific. The last win had come on February 19, 2003, a 70-61 win at the Walter Pyramid.
THREE-POINT STREAK •164 Games And Counting The 49ers have connected on at least on three-pointer in every game Larry Reynolds has coached at Long Beach State (135 games). The 49ers have hit at least one three-pointer in 164 consecutive games, dating back to the 2001-02 season. The last time Long Beach State didn't hit a three in a game was in the 2001-02 season opener against Western Michigan (11/15/01) where The Beach was 0-9. Last year the 49ers finished 21st in the nation averaging 8.53 made three's per game. Their 256 three's in 2005-06 were a new school record, shattering the old mark of 200.
MORE LONG-RANGE NOTES •Shoot .524 vs. Fullerton The 49ers are shooting well from beyond the three-point line. Long Beach is shooting .431 (88-204) from three-point range in Big West Conference games, tops in the league. Against CS Fullerton the 49ers were 11-21 from long-range for a season-best .524 percentage. In the win over UCSB on January 4 the 49ers shot .515 (17-33) from beyond the arc. The 17 made three's tied a school-record. Long Beach had hit double digits in made three-pointers nine times this season and all nine of those efforts have come in the past 14 games. Overall the 49ers are shooting .364 (174-478) from three-point range on the year. Last year Long Beach connected on .355 (256-721) of its long-range attempts.
ASSISTS VS. TURNOVERS •More Assists Than TO's in 5 of Last 8 The 49ers have had more assists than turnovers in five of its last eight games. In Saturday's win over Pacific, the 49ers had 18 assists and a season-low five turnovers. On January 20 vs. UC Riverside the 49ers finished with 18 assists to 11 turnovers and against CS Fullerton the 49ers had 12 assists and seven turnovers. In Big West games the 49ers are averaging 16.0 assists per game compared to 11.4 turnovers for a +4.6 ratio. Eleven times this year the 49ers have had more turnovers than assists in a game, but that has only occurred four times (Manhattan, at CSUN, at UCI, CSUN) in the past 12 games.
TURNOVER MARGIN •Fewer Turnovers Than Opponents Through the first 21 games of the season the 49ers have committed less turnovers than its opponent 15 times. The 49ers are 12-3 when they commit less turnovers than their opponent. Over the past 13 games the 49ers have had less turnovers than their opponents 12 times. On the year, the 49ers are averaging 14.1 turnovers per game while forcing 17.0 (+2.9).
RICKS DOUBLE'S UP •Second Double-Double This Year Senior Dominique Ricks picked up his second double-double this season, and third in his 49er career, in this past Thursday's win over CS Northridge. Ricks finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds. His first double-double came on November 15 vs. San Jose State where he has 11 points and 10 boards. Of his 12 rebounds on Thursday, six were on the offensive glass. Ricks leads the squad in rebounding at 6.4 per game and he leads the team and the Big West Conference in offensive rebounding at 3.19 per game (67 total).
NIXON GOES FOR 35 •Third 30-Plus Game In 49er Career Senior Aaron Nixon put up a career-high 35 points vs. UCSB on January 4, his third 30-plus outing as a 49er. Last year at UC Davis (2/25) he scored 33 points and against CS Fullerton in the Big West Tournament quarterfinals he scored 31 points. The 35 point outing tied for 17th-best on the LBSU single game chart. The school-record for points in a game is 45, set by Ed Ratleff vs. Saint Mary's on December 10, 1970.
LIGHTNING DOES STRIKE TWICE •Nixon Has Two Game-Winners To Credit 49er senior guard Aaron Nixon has proven that lightning can strike twice. Nixon has knocked down two game-winning three-point shots at the buzzer to lift Long Beach State to victories. The first came on March 10, 2006 in the semi-finals of the Big West Tournament as he knocked down a three from the far corner lifting the 49ers to a 75-73 victory. The latest heroics came on December 22, 2006 at Loyola Marymount as he hit a 35-foot shot at the buzzer to lift Long Beach to a 66-65 victory.
WIN STREAK •Tenth-Best In History The nine-game win streak the 49ers had earlier this season tied for 10th best in 49er history. The last time the 49ers won nine games in a row was during the 1989-90 campaign under Joe Harrington. The streak ran from Feb. 12 through March 10. The streak ended on March 11 with a 92-74 loss to UNLV in the Big West Tournament. The school-record streak is 19 games set during the 1969-70 season under Jerry Tarkanian.
DOWN THE STRETCH •49ers Closing Out Games The 49ers are 11-0 when leading at the half and 2-0 when tied at the half. But, when leading a game with five minutes remaining, the 49ers are a perfect 15-0. In five of their six losses the 49ers were behind with five minutes remaining, with four of the deficits being in double digits. Against Air Force the game was tied 52-52 when the clock hit five minutes remaining.
HOUSTON RANKS NO. 5 •Moves Ahead Of Lucious Harris Senior point guard Kevin Houston (Highland) has recorded a team-high 94 assists this season and has jumped to the No. 5 spot on the 49er career chart for assists with 378. He moved past Lucious Harris into the number five spot. Currently standing in the No. 4 spot is Ed Ratleff with 410 assists. Houston also needs just five more assists to set a personal season high for assists. He garnered 98 assists in each of the past two seasons after distributing 88 as a freshman in 2003-04.
MORE ON HOUSTON •Outstanding Assist-to-Turnover Ratio Senior guard Kevin Houston has a team-high 94 assists this season compared to just 54 turnovers. But, in his last 12 games he has 57 assists and just 21 turnovers. In the win over CS Fullerton he had six assists (14 points) and no turnovers. In the win over UCSB he had seven assists and just one turnover. Houston is currently second in the Big West at 4.48 assists per game and first in assist/turnover ratio at 1.74. In Big West Conference games he ranks second in assists at 5.00 per game and first in assist/turnover ratio at 2.50.
FREE STEPS UP •First Back-To-Back Games Since Early December Travon Free played in both games this week, the first time since early in the year he has been able to play in back-to-back games. Free has been bothered all season-long with knee problems and had missed the previous 10 games prior to this past week. Free had four points and one rebound in eight minutes vs. CS Northridge and the had six points and four boards in 13 minutes vs. Pacific. Free had played in just one game (Sacramento State, Dec. 9) since playing in four consecutive games (Nov. 24-Dec. 3) earlier this year.
FIRST MEETING VS. UCSB •49ers Won 101-65 The 49ers won the first meeting between the two on January 4 in Long Beach 101-65. The 49ers shot .545 (36-66) from the field and .515 (17-33) from three-point range. Aaron Nixon scored a career-high 35 points (7-9 three's), Kejuan Johnson added 15 and Sterling Byrd 11. The 49ers had a season-best 24 assists and committed just 11 turnovers. UCSB got 11 points from Cecil Brown and 10 each from Alex Harris and Chris Devine. UCSB had 19 turnovers.
FIRST MEETING VS. CAL POLY •49ers Won 77-70 The 49ers won the first meeting with Cal Poly this year 77-70 in Long Beach. Kejuan Johnson scored a career-high 26 points and Kevin Houston added 14. The 49ers shot just .373 (25-67) from the field for the game. Tyler McGinn led Cal Poly with 22 points and Derek Stockalper had 11 points and 13 rebounds. Trailing 64-62 with 5:54 left, the 49ers went on an 11-2 run to take a 73-66 lead with 1:19 remaining.
HOME COOKING •Beach 10-0 At Home This Year The 49ers are 10-0 at home this season and have won their last 11 games (dating back to last season) at the Walter Pyramid. Long Beach is averaging 86.1 points per game at home. Since February of 2005, the 49ers are 24-4 at home. Overall in the Walter Pyramid, Long Beach State is 112-58 (.659). The 100th home win came on February 15, 2006 vs. CS Fullerton.
DOUBLING UP •Six Players In Double Digits In the win at UC Davis (12/28) the 49ers had six players hit for double digits, a season-high. January 20 vs. UC Riverside they did it again (Houston 17, Ricks 15, Nixon 14, Johnson 12, Dawson 11, Byrd 10). Last year the 49ers had one game where they had seven players tally double digits, and that was on February 18 at Manhattan (Hawkins 25, Houston 17, Johnson 16, Hodges 14, Darby 13, Nixon 11, Dawson 10).
ROAD WINS •Four True Road Wins This Year The 57-53 win at Maryland-Baltimore County (Dec. 3) was the first "true" road win for the 49ers this year. They followed that up with a 76-67 win at San Jose State, a 66-65 win at Loyola Marymount, and an 89-75 win at UC Davis. The 49ers are 4-5 on the road and 1-1 on neutral sites (10-0 at home). Last year the 49ers lost their first six road games before they downed Cal Poly 79-66 on January 9. Long Beach went 8-1 in true road games from January 9 through March 4 of last season, finishing 8-7 on the road and 2-1 at neutral sites (Big West Tournament).
DEFENSIVE STATS •Opponents Shooting .428 From Field Only three teams have shot .500 or better from the field against the 49ers this season. Cal State Northridge shot a season-best .536 (30-56) from the field against the 49ers on January 13. But, overall the 49ers have held six opponents below .400 and four more below .450. Overall, opponents are shooting just .428 from the field.
BIG WEST STATS •Averaging 88.8 Points Per Game In Big West Conference games the 49ers have turned up its offense. Long Beach is first in league games in scoring (88.8), scoring margin (+13.9), field goal percentage (.475), three-point field goal percentage (.431), steals (7.50), three-point field goals made (11.0), assist/turnover ratio (1.41) and turnover margin (+4.88).
