Kay Hoey Wins Individual Title With a 146

FRESNO, CA-- Long Beach State junior Kay Hoey shot an even par 72 on Tuesday and claimed the individual medalist honors with a two-over 146 at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational at the Copper River Country Club. The 49ers finished in fourth place at the Tournament, shooting a two-day score of 605,including a 299 in Tuesday's second round.

The victory by Hoey was her fourth tournament win during her time at Long Beach State. She captured the same title in 2005 at the Fresno State Invitational, and this past fall she won the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic (209) in Fort Collins, CO. Senior Beth Holtermann had an outstanding tournament as she tied for 14th place with a 151 (76-75) and Katy Barrett (77-77) and Brenda Chhuor (79-75) both tied for 28th place with a 154.

Fresno State won the overall team title with a 596, followed by UC Irvine (598) and Hawaii (599). The 49ers finished ahead of fellow Big West squad UC Davis (tied for 6th place) and #5-ranked University of Denver (8th place).

"I am very proud of the girls for stepping up today," said 49er Head Coach Sue Ewart. "Our goal was to break 300 today, which we did. We left room for improvement, but this was a very good start to the spring season, and a very good start for Kay. We have very good team energy right now and are motivated. Our goal is to be a top five team for the rest of the season."

The 49ers will next be in action on march 12-14 when they compete at the UNLV Spring Invitational at the Black Mountain Golf Club.
