Dirtbags Sweep Weekly Awards in the Big West IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State Dirtbags Danny Espinosa (Santa Ana) and Bryan Shaw (Livermore) swept the Big West Conference Player of the week awards as Espinosa batted .467 over the week, while Shaw picked up the win with three shutout innings in Saturday's series clincher over Texas. It was a big week for the pair of sophomores, as Espinosa's three-run homer on Tuesday in the eighth inning completed a seven-run comeback by The Beach at Pepperdine, before his game-winning single on Friday completed a three-run ninth inning. His double on Saturday and ensuing game-winning run in the 10th led to the team's second seven-run comeback of the week. Shaw's five strikeouts were a career-high, as his two in the eighth with the go-ahead runs on second and third, starting with no outs, keyed the victory. Shaw, the team's closer, pitched a shutout inning at Pepperdine and is slated to start the ninth when the game is completed at Blair Field on April 10. The Dirtbags, who moved up to No. 20 nationally, will head to previously top-ranked and now No. 6-ranked Rice this weekend for a three-game series. |
