THE RECORDS •49ers Sweep Central Coast Trip Long Beach State is 17-6 overall and 8-2 in the Big West Conference after sweeping Cal Poly and UCSB on the road for the first time since March of 2000. The 49ers have won four games in a row and are in first place in the Big West. Long Beach has a first place showdown on Wednesday at Cal State Fullerton, and then hosts Hawai'i on Saturday evening. CS Fullerton is 18-5 overall and 8-3 in the Big West, one-half game behind the 49ers. The Titans won at Pacific and CS Northridge last week. Hawai'i is 14-10 overall and 5-6 in the Western Athletic Conference. They host New Mexico State on Monday and play t Utah State on Wednesday before heading to California.
THE COACH •20-7 Last Two-Plus Seasons In February And March Larry Reynolds (UC Riverside, 1976) is 56-81 (.409) in his fifth year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Overall, Reynolds is 166-116 (.589) in his ninth year as a collegiate head coach. Since February 3, 2005, the 49ers are 20-7 (.741) in the months of February (14-5) and March (6-2).
THE SERIES •49ers Lead Fullerton Series, 56-36 •49ers Lead Hawai'i Series, 6-3 The 49ers lead their series with Cal State Fullerton by a 56-36 count. The 49ers have won the last five meetings against the Titans, including a 95-85 win at the Walter Pyramid on January 18. Long Beach leads its series with Hawai'i by a 6-3 margin. The last meeting was on December 20, 2004 in the opening round of the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, which resulted in a 54-45 UH victory. The last time Hawai'i played at Long Beach State was on December 6, 1995 and the 49ers won that game 71-66.
BEACH BEATS CAL POLY •Houston Tallies Career-High 22 Points Aaron Nixon had 26 points and seven steals and Kevin Houston had a career-high 22 points and eight rebounds to lead the 49ers to an 80-77 win at Cal Poly on Thursday. The 49ers trailed by as many as 14 points (36-22) in the first half, but used a 12-2 run to pull to within four points at half. Houston had 10 of those 12 points. Then, trailing 71-69, Sterling Byrd hit a three at 3:11 to give the 49ers the lead. Byrd would then hit another three at 2:01 to give Long Beach the lead for good at 76-73. Houston sank two free throws with 17 seconds left and Byrd blocked a Trae Clark three at the end of the game to seal the win. Dominique Ricks had a stellar game as well finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds. The 49ers shot .492 (30-61) from the field and hit 10 three's.
LATE RALLY LIFTS 49ERS •Nixon Hits Game-Winner At End Aaron Nixon hit the game-winning shot with four-tenth's of a second left to lift Long Beach State to a 68-67 win at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night. Kejuan Johnson led the 49ers with 22 points and Sterling Byrd added 19 points and 11 boards. Long Beach trailed 64-54 with seven minutes remaining, but went on a 12-0 run to grab a 66-64 lead at 1:46 after two Johnson free throws. UCSB tied the game at 1:27 on an Ivan Elliott layup. Long Beach missed a shot on its next possession, but Nixon stole the ball with 24 seconds left to give the 49ers one last chance. The 49ers shot just .418 (23-55) from the field, but force 17 turnovers and were 14-18 (.778) at the free throw line. Nixon finished with 14 points and three steals and Houston added 11 points to the cause.
ESPNU BRACKET BUSTER •49ers To Host Hawai'i Long Beach State drew the University of Hawai'i for its O'Reilly Auto Parts ESPNU Bracket Busters game on February 17 at the Walter Pyramid. Hawai'i is 14-10 on the year and 5-6 in the Western Athletic Conference. The game will be played at 7:05 pm at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers will return a game to Hawai'i next season. In last year's Bracket Buster game the 49ers traveled to Manhattan College, winning that game 108-94.
CS FULLERTON FACTS •Titans Stand At 18-5, 8-3 Big West Cal State Fullerton won two road games last week, winning at Pacific (82-77) and Cal State Northridge (75-73) to improve to 18-5 overall and 8-3 in the Big West Conference. CSUF is one-half game behind the 49ers in the league standings. At Pacific, Frank Robinson had 19 points and Bobby Brown 15 in the victory. At Northridge, Brown had 22 points and seven assists and Scott Cutley 16. On the year, Brown leads the squad in scoring at 19.4 points per game while shooting .426 (63-148) from three-point range. He also has a team-best 109 assists (5.45 apg). Cutley checks in at 16..5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting .521 from the field. Four of Fullerton's five starters average in double digits. Fullerton is averaging 84.0 points per game and allowing 74.2.
HAWAII FACTS •Play Two Games Before Facing 49ers Hawai'i is 14-10 overall and 5-6 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Warriors host New Mexico State on Monday and play at Utah State on Wednesday. Saturday night they defeated Louisiana Tech 74-50 in Honolulu. Bobby Nash led the way with 18 points and Matt Gibson and Dominic Waters each tallied 16 points. Hawaii was 12-20 from three-point range for the game. On the year, Matt Lojeski is averaging 15.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He is shooting .530 from the field and .802 at the free throw line. Ahmet Gueye checks in at 11.8 points and a team-high 8.2 rebounds per game and Nash is third at 11.0 points per game. As a team Hawai'i is averaging 71.8 points per game and allowing 66.2. Hawai'i is averaging 17.0 turnovers per contest this year.
NIXON NAMED PLAYER OF WEEK •Fourth Honor This Year Senior Aaron Nixon was named as the Big West Conference Co-Player of the Week on Monday after leading the 49ers to two wins last week on the road. Cal Poly's Dawin Whiten was the co-winner along with Nixon. Nixon averaged 20.0 points and 5.0 steals per game in the two outings, including scoring the game-winning bucket at UCSB with four-tenth's of a second left on the clock. The award is the fourth this year for Nixon. The four awards are the most in the Big West in a single season since Jerry Green earned the honor four times in the 2000-01 campaign. This is the sixth time in the history of the conference a player has earned four Player of the Week awards in a single season. The conference record is five, set by Michael Olowokandi in 1997-98.
OFFENSIVE NUMBERS •49ers Hit 101 Points Vs. UCSB The 49ers hit 100 points for the first time, and only time, this season, racking up 101 points in the win over UCSB on January 4. Last year the 49ers hit the century mark three times en route to averaging an NCAA-best 83.3 points per game. Long Beach has put up some impressive numbers in Big West Conference play thus far. The 49ers lead the league averaging 85.8 points per game in conference outings. The 49ers have scored 90 or more points in four of their 10 league games and they have hit 80 or more points seven times.
THREE-POINT STREAK •166 Games And Counting The 49ers have connected on at least on three-pointer in every game Larry Reynolds has coached at Long Beach State (137 games). The 49ers have hit at least one three-pointer in 166 consecutive games, dating back to the 2001-02 season. The last time Long Beach State didn't hit a three in a game was in the 2001-02 season opener against Western Michigan (11/15/01) where The Beach was 0-9. Last year the 49ers finished 21st in the nation averaging 8.53 made three's per game. Their 256 three's in 2005-06 were a new school record, shattering the old mark of 200. This year the 49ers have hit 192 three's (8.35 per game). The 192 treys ranks number four all-time at Long Beach State.
MORE LONG-RANGE NOTES •Shoot .524 vs. CS Fullerton The 49ers are shooting well from beyond the three-point line in conference action. Long Beach is shooting .419 (106-253) from three-point range in Big West Conference games, tops in the league. Against CS Fullerton on January 18 the 49ers were 11-21 from long-range for a season-best .524 percentage. In the win over UCSB on January 4 the 49ers shot .515 (17-33) from beyond the arc. The 17 made three's tied a school-record. Long Beach had hit double digits in made three-pointers 10 times this season and all 10 of those efforts have come in the past 16 games. Overall the 49ers are shooting .364 (192-527) from three-point range on the year. Last year Long Beach connected on .355 (256-721) of its long-range attempts.
15 OF 17 •Beach Hot Since December Since beginning the season at 2-4, including losses to nationally-ranked UCLA, Air Force and USC all away from home, the 49ers have won 15 of their last 17 games. Since losing at Temple on December 2, the 49ers rolled off a nine-game win streak and are currently on a four-game streak. The 49ers are 6-2 in true road games since the loss at Temple.
TURNOVER MARGIN •Fewer Turnovers Than Opponents Through the first 23 games of the season the 49ers have committed less turnovers than its opponent 16 times. The 49ers are 13-3 when they commit less turnovers than their opponent. Over the past 15 games the 49ers have had less turnovers than their opponents 13 times. On the year, the 49ers are averaging 14.3 turnovers per game while forcing 17.0 (+2.7).
RICKS DOUBLE'S UP •Third Double-Double This Year Senior Dominique Ricks has three double-double's this season, including hitting that mark twice in the past four games. Thursday at Cal Poly he had 17 points (a season-high) and 12 rebounds. On February 1 vs. CS Northridge he had 13 points and 12 boards. His first double-double this season came on November 15 vs. San Jose State with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Ricks is currently averaging 7.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He leads the team with 74 offensive rebounds. Of his 12 rebounds last Thursday at Cal Poly, seven were on the offensive glass. He leads the Big West in offensive rebounding (3.22).
NIXON GOES FOR 35 •Third 30-Plus Game In 49er Career Senior Aaron Nixon put up a career-high 35 points vs. UCSB on January 4, his third 30-plus outing as a 49er. Last year at UC Davis (2/25) he scored 33 points and against CS Fullerton in the Big West Tournament quarterfinals he scored 31 points. The 35 point outing tied for 17th-best on the LBSU single game chart. The school-record for points in a game is 45, set by Ed Ratleff vs. Saint Mary's on December 10, 1970.
THREE TIMES IS A CHARM •Nixon Has Three Game-Winners To Credit 49er senior guard Aaron Nixon has proven that when the game is on the line, get the ball in his hands. Last Saturday at UCSB he hit the game-winning shot with four-tenth's of a second left as the 49ers won 68-67. On December 22, 2006 at Loyola Marymount, he hit a 35-footer at the buzzer lifting the 49ers to a 66-65 win. Nixon has knocked down two game-winning three-point shots at the buzzer to lift Long Beach State to victories. His first game-winner came on March 10, 2006 in the semi-finals of the Big West Tournament as he knocked down a three from the far corner lifting the 49ers to a 75-73 victory.
WIN STREAK •Tenth-Best In History The nine-game win streak the 49ers had earlier this season tied for 10th best in 49er history. The last time the 49ers won nine games in a row was during the 1989-90 campaign under Joe Harrington. The streak ran from Feb. 12 through March 10. The streak ended on March 11 with a 92-74 loss to UNLV in the Big West Tournament. The school-record streak is 19 games set during the 1969-70 season under Jerry Tarkanian.
DOWN THE STRETCH •49ers Closing Out Games The 49ers are 11-0 when leading at the half and 2-0 when tied at the half. But, when leading a game with five minutes remaining, the 49ers are a perfect 15-0. In five of their six losses the 49ers were behind with five minutes remaining, with four of the deficits being in double digits. Against Air Force the game was tied 52-52 when the clock hit five minutes remaining.
COMING FROM BEHIND •49ers Trail At Half In Both Last Week The 49ers are 4-6 this season when trailing at the half, and two of those wins came this past week. Thursday the 49ers trailed 38-34 at Cal Poly before winning 80-77. Saturday the 49ers trailed UCSB 38-28, before winning 68-67. The other two games were against Manhattan (32-30) and UMBC (23-22). Long Beach is also 2-5 when trailing with five minutes left, and both of those wins came on the road last week. HOUSTON
RANKS NO. 5 ALL-TIME •Moves Ahead Of Lucious Harris Senior point guard Kevin Houston has recorded a team-high 100 assists this season and has jumped to the No. 5 spot on the 49er career chart for assists with 384. He moved past Lucious Harris into the number five spot. Currently standing in the No. 4 spot is Ed Ratleff with 410 assists. Houston has set a single season personal-high for himself with those 100 assists this season. He garnered 98 assists in each of the past two seasons after distributing 88 as a freshman in 2003-04. Houston needs 14 more assists to move into the 49er single season Top 20 list for assists. Holding down the number 19 spot with 114 assists are Brian Camper (1992-93) and Dave Shutts (1980-81).
MORE ON HOUSTON •Outstanding Assist-to-Turnover Ratio Senior guard Kevin Houston has a team-high 100 assists this season compared to just 62 turnovers. But, in his last 14 games he has 63 assists and just 29 turnovers. In the win over CS Fullerton he had six assists (14 points) and no turnovers. In the win over UCSB at home he had seven assists and just one turnover. Houston is currently third in the Big West at 4.35 assists per game and second in assist/turnover ratio at 1.61. In Big West Conference games he ranks second in assists at 4.60 per game and second in assist/turnover ratio at 1.92.
FREE STEPS UP •First Back-To-Back Games Since Early December Travon Free played in both home games against CS Northridge and Pacific (Feb. 1-3), the first time since early in the year he has been able to play in back-to-back games. Free has been bothered all season-long with knee problems and had missed the previous 10 games prior to this past week. Free had four points and one rebound in eight minutes vs. CS Northridge and the had six points and four boards in 13 minutes vs. Pacific. Free had played in just one game (Sacramento State, Dec. 9) since playing in four consecutive games (Nov. 24-Dec. 3) earlier this year.
FIRST MEETING VS. CSUF •49ers Prevailed 95-85 The 49ers and Titans met on January 18 in Long Beach, with the 49ers winning 95-85. Aaron Nixon led the way with 27 points, Kejuan Johnson added 20 and Kevin Houston 14 points and six assists. The 49ers shot .455 (35-77) from the field, but were 11-21 (.524) from three-point range. The 49ers out-rebounded the Titans 48-46 and committed just seven turnovers. Fullerton was led by 28 points from Bobby Brown and 23 points and 10 rebounds by Scott Cutley. CSUF led 70-69 with 7:36 remaining, only to see the 49ers go on a 20-9 run over the next four-plus minutes to take an 89-79 lead at 3:09.
HOME COOKING •Beach 10-0 At Home This Year The 49ers are 10-0 at home this season and have won their last 11 games (dating back to last season) at the Walter Pyramid. Long Beach is averaging 86.1 points per game at home. Since February of 2005, the 49ers are 24-4 at home. Overall in the Walter Pyramid, Long Beach State is 112-58 (.659). The 100th home win came on February 15, 2006 vs. CS Fullerton.
DOUBLING UP •Six Players In Double Digits In the win at UC Davis (12/28) the 49ers had six players hit for double digits, a season-high. January 20 vs. UC Riverside they did it again (Houston 17, Ricks 15, Nixon 14, Johnson 12, Dawson 11, Byrd 10). Last year the 49ers had one game where they had seven players tally double digits, and that was on February 18 at Manhattan (Hawkins 25, Houston 17, Johnson 16, Hodges 14, Darby 13, Nixon 11, Dawson 10).
ROAD WINS •Six True Road Wins This Year The 57-53 win at Maryland-Baltimore County (Dec. 3) was the first "true" road win for the 49ers this year after they had dropped their first three on the road. After winning at Cal Poly and UCSB last week, the 49ers are 6-5 on the road and 1-1 on neutral sites (10-0 at home). Last year the 49ers lost their first six road games before they downed Cal Poly 79-66 on January 9. Long Beach went 8-1 in true road games from January 9 through March 4 of last season, finishing 8-7 on the road and 2-1 at neutral sites (Big West Tournament).
DEFENSIVE STATS •Opponents Shooting .433 From Field Only four teams have shot .500 or better from the field against the 49ers this season. Cal State Northridge shot a season-best .536 (30-56) from the field against the 49ers on January 13. But, overall the 49ers have held six opponents below .400 and four more below .450. Overall, opponents are shooting just .433 from the field.
BIG WEST STATS •Averaging 85.8 Points Per Game In Big West Conference games the 49ers have turned up its offense. Long Beach is first in league games in scoring (85.8), scoring margin (+11.5), field goal percentage (.472), three-point field goal percentage (.419), three-point field goals made (10.60), and turnover margin (+4.00). Individually, Aaron Nixon is first in scoring (19.5 ppg), steals (1.80 spg) and three-pointers made per game (3.40).
