·Beach Beats USF, 71-68
Long Beach State is 3-6 on the season after a 71-68 victory over San Francisco on December 18 at the Walter Pyramid. Long Beach will next be in action on December 28-29 at the Cal Golden Bear Classic. On Friday the 28th the 49ers tangle with Cal at 5 pm. At 2:30 pm, Bucknell faces off against North Dakota State. On Saturday, the consolation game is at 5 pm with the championship game slated for 7:30 pm. California is 6-1 on the season and will host Delaware State on December 20 and the University of Utah on December 22. North Dakota State is 6-5 on the season. The Bison last played on December 15 when they defeated Colorado State at home, 83-69. Bucknell is 4-5 on the season after defeating Cornell 88-75 on December 19.

·Dan Monson Enters First Year At Long Beach
·Career Record Of 173-129 In 10 Years
Dan Monson (Idaho, 1985) is 3-6 (.333) in his first season as the head coach at Long Beach State. Monson has compiled a 173-129 (.573) record his 11th year as a Division I head coach. He was 52-17 (.754) in two years at Gonzaga, leading the Bulldogs to the Elite Eight in 1999. In eight years at Minnesota he compiled a 118-106 (.527) mark with five post-season appearances.

The 49ers are 0-2 all-time against California. The last meeting came on November 21, 2005 in Berkeley, an 88-69 Cal triumph. The only other meeting was in the first round of the NIT on March 15, 2000. Cal won that game 70-66. The 49ers are 1-0 against Bucknell, winning 65-45 on November 24, 1985 at the New Mexico Tip-Off Tournament. Long Beach has never played North Dakota State.

·Beach Shoots .556 From Field
Donovan Morris scored 26 points and Darnell Porter 18, both career-high's, to lift Long Beach State to a 71-68 win over the University of San Francisco on Tuesday evening at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers shot a season-high .556 (25-45) from the field and were also 7-13 (.538) from three-point range. Trailing 64-61 with just under three minutes to go, the 49ers closed out the contest with a 10-4 run. Back-to-back three-point plays by Morris (2:25) and Cornel Williams (1:47) gave Long Beach the lead for good. Morris sealed the win with two free throws with 21 seconds remaining. Williams added eight points and six rebounds while Greg Plater added eight points. Long Beach out-rebounded the Dons 32-to-26 as Morris led the way with seven boards.

The Cal Golden Bears are 6-1 on the season. They host Delaware State and Utah before breaking for the holidays. Cal's last game was on December 9 as they lost at Kansas State 82-75. In the game Ryan Anderson led the way with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Jerome Randle chipped in with 12 points. On the season Anderson is leading the Cal attack averaging 22.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Anderson is also shooting .529 from the field. ·Morris Leads Big West In Minutes
Junior Donovan Morris has been an "Iron Man" for the 49ers this season. He leads the team, and the Big West Conference, averaging 37.8 minutes played per game. He played all 45 minutes in the 49ers overtime game at Pepperdine and at Hawai'i he played all 40 minutes. Tuesday against San Francisco he played a total of 37 minutes. All-together, he has been on the court for 340 of the 49ers 370 minutes of action this season (.919).
FREE THROW SHOOTING ON THE RISE
·Season-Best .917 at Hawai'i
The 49ers are shooting .732 at the free throw line this season, including a season-best .917 (11-12) at Hawai'i. Tuesday against San Francisco the 49ers connected on 14-17 (.824) charity tosses. In its last four outings the 49ers are shooting .808 (42-52) at the charity stripe. Individually, Donovan Morris is shooting .875 (14-16) from the line in the past four games and Brian Freeman has hit 10 of his last 12 charity tosses (.833) in the last four outings.
LONG-RANGE SHOOTING IMPROVING

The 49ers are shooting the better from three-point range. In the first four games of the season the 49ers shot .243 (18-74) from three-point range. In its last five games the 49ers have hit .474 (37-78) of its long-range attempts. The 49ers shot .538 (7-13) from three-point range in Tuesday's win over San Francisco and .500 (8-16) at Hawai'i. Individually, Brian Freeman is 4-4 (1.000) in his last five outings, Donovan Morris is .647 (11-17) and Maurice Clady is .625 (5-8).
CLOSE CALLS ON THE ROAD
·Three Consecutive Close Outings
The 49ers have been close, but just haven't been able to get over the hump on the road this year. The 49ers are 0-5 in road games, but they have dropped three tight games. They fell in overtime at Pepperdine on November 21 and suffered back-to-back four-point losses in their last two outings at Saint Louis (52-48) and at Hawai'i (61-57). In the game at Washington, the score was tied 61-61 with 9:36 left on the clock.
MORRIS CONTINUES SCORING STREAK
·Three Consecutive 20-Plus Point Outings
Junior guard Donovan Morris has been hot from the field having hit 20 or more points in his last three games. Tuesday in the win over USF he had a career-high 26 points and he led the team with seven rebounds. He tallied 24 points on Dec. 9 at Hawai'i and 22 on Dec. 5 in the win over LMU. Over the past three games he is averaging 24.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting .610 (25-41) from the field, .583 (7-12) from three-point range and .789 (15-19) from the free throw line. Morris leads the 49ers in scoring at 16.6 points per game and he's scored in double digits in eight consecutive games. Morris had a big game in the 49ers win over Idaho State on November 17 as he tallied 20 points and added 10 rebounds, for his first double-double as a collegiate player. Morris, who has hit 10 rebounds twice this season, is first on the team in rebounding at 6.4 per outing. He is shooting an impressive .820 (41-50) at the free throw line.
FREEMAN CONTINUES TO SHINE
·Double-Double vs. LMU
Junior Brian Freeman continues to put up big numbers for the 49ers. He recorded his first double-double as a 49er against LMU on December 5 as he had a career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Freeman is averaging 9.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game while shooting .640 (32-50) from the field. In Tuesday's win over San Francisco he only scored six points, but he dished out a career-high tying five assists and added two steals. At Washington he had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Freeman has hit double digits in scoring in four of the last six games (10.8 ppg). He leads the team with seven blocked shots and 25 assists (2.8 apg).
CLADY SHOWS SPARK
·10 Points and 7 Assists vs. LMU
Junior guard Maurice Clady had a big game vs. LMU. Clady, who had played a total of just 57 minutes in the first six games of the season and tallied only eight points, had a career-high 10 points, seven assists, three rebounds and three steals in 27 minutes. He also blocked a shot. Clady was a spark-plug for the 49ers off the bench against the Lions and played 15 minutes in the second half. At Hawai'i he started his second game as a 49er and responded with nine points, three rebounds and two assists. He was a perfect 3-3 from three-point range. Clady is currently averaging 3.2 points per game and is shooting .636 (7-11) from three-point range.
WILLIAMS RECORDS SEASON-HIGH'S
·10 Points at Washington
Junior Cornel Williams had a career-high 10 points at Washington, adding five rebounds and three assists. At Hawai'i he finished with nine points and five rebounds in a career-best 29 minutes of action. This past Tuesday in the win over USF he had eight points and six rebounds in 30 minutes. Williams is averaging 5.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game for the 49ers. In the 49ers win over Idaho State he had seven points and a career-best seven rebounds. In his last three outings he is averaging 7.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
PORTER TALLIES CAREER-HIGH VS. USF
·18 Points vs. San Francisco
Redshirt freshman Darnell Porter had a big outing against San Francisco on Tuesday as he scored a career-high 18 points. Porter also added five rebounds and three assists. He was three-of-four from three-point range for the game. His three assists and 31 minutes played also represented career-high's for him. Porter, who is averaging 7.4 points per game this year, has hit double digits in scoring three this season (12 at Washington, 10 at Pepperdine). Porter is tied for the team lead with his 13 steals.

·Ware and Phelps Sign With LBSU
Long Beach State Head Men's Basketball Coach Dan Monson announced that Eugene Phelps (F, 6-6, 200, Los Angeles, Calif., Taft HS) and Casper Ware (G, 5-9, 170, Cerritos, Calif., Gahr HS) signed a National Letters-of-Intent with the 49ers. Both Phelps and Ware were recently named to the Long Beach Press-Telegram's 29th Annual "Best In The West" third team. Phelps averaged 11.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game last season at Taft High School in Woodland Hills. He shot .738 (59-80) from the field and had 10 games in double figure scoring. He tallied 22 points vs. Chatsworth and had 23 points and 10 rebounds vs. Campbell Hall. Ware was a first team All-CIF I-AA selection at Gahr High School. Ware helped lead the Gladiators to a 24-5 mark and a 9-1 record in the San Gabriel Valley League. Gahr lost to St.John Bosco in the CIF-SS playoffs after advancing to the CIF quarterfinals his sophomore season. Ware was a second team All-CIF III-AA selection as a sophomore and first team All-CIF I-AA as a junior. He is a two-time first team All-San Gabriel Valley League selection and was the league's co-Player of the Year in 2007. Ware was a first team selection to the Long Beach Press-Telegram's "Dream Team" last season.
