Long Beach State is 2-6 on the season after defeating Loyola Marymount at home, 77-52, and falling at Hawai'i, 61-57. San Francisco is 4-5 on the year and plays at UC Irvine on Saturday, December 15. After the USF game on December 18th, the 49ers are off until the California Golden Bear Classic in Berkeley on December 28 & 29.

·Dan Monson Enters First Year At Long Beach
·Career Record Of 172-129 In 10 Years
Dan Monson (Idaho, 1985) is 2-6 (.250) in his first season as the head coach at Long Beach State. Monson has compiled a 172-129 (.571) record his 11th year as a Division I head coach. He was 52-17 (.754) in two years at Gonzaga, leading the Bulldogs to the Elite Eight in 1999. In eight years at Minnesota he compiled a 118-106 (.527) mark with five post-season appearances.

The 49ers lead their series with San Francisco by a 3-2 count. The last meeting was on November 24, 2000 at the Big Island Invitational in Hilo, Hawai'i. Long Beach won that contest 76-74. The previous meeting prior to the Big Island Invitational was on December 4, 1974 in Long Beach and the Dons won that contest 94-84.

The 49ers rolled to a 77-52 win over Loyola Marymount on December 5. Donovan Morris had a career-high 22 points, Brian Freeman had 17 points and 10 rebounds and junior guard Maurice Clady had a career-night with 10 points, seven assists and three steals. The 49ers shot a season-best .500 (28-56) from the field and knocked down a season-high nine three-pointers. Long Beach out-rebounded the Lions 40-to-26, including grabbing 17 offensive boards. Long Beach also had a season-high 19 assists in the contest. The 49ers led 35-31 at the half, but opened the second half with a 7-0 run. The 49ers out-scored LMU 42-21 in the second stanza, forced 17 LMU turnovers and limited the Lions to a .320 (8-25) field goal percentage in the second half.

·49er Comeback Falls Short
·Morris Leads Way with 24 Points
Donovan Morris scored a career-high 24 points, but a second half rally fell just short as the 49ers lost at Hawai'i 61-57 on Sunday evening. Morris added a team-high six rebounds and the 49ers shot .500 (8-16) from three-point range. Maurice Clady, Brian Freeman and Cornel Williams each scored nine points. The 49ers trailed 54-38 with 9:08 remaining, but used a 19-7 run over the next seven minutes to pull to within 61-57 with 2:05 left in the contest. Neither team scored the remainder of the contest. Long Beach out-rebounded the Warriors 32-to-31, but committed 24 turnovers.
SAN FRANCISCO FACTS
·Dons Are 4-5 on the Year
The University of San Francisco is 4-5 on the season and will play at UC Irvine on December 15. Last Saturday the Dons defeated Weber State 67-65 at home. In that contest Myron Strong tallied 16 points and five assists while Manny Quezada had 15 points and Dior Lowhorn 14. USF forced 25 WSU turnovers in the contest. USF has played two Big West teams, falling 74-69 at UCSB and 84-57 at home to Pacific. On the year, Lowhorn leads the squad at 22.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Quezada checks in at 16.4 points per outing. USF is averaging 73.0 points per game and is shooting .445 from the field. Opponents are averaging 76.9 points per game and are shooting .484 overall from the field.

Junior Donovan Morris has been an "Iron Man" for the 49ers this season. He leads the team, and the Big West Conference, averaging 37.9 minutes played per game. He played all 45 minutes in the 49ers overtime game at Pepperdine and this past Sunday at Hawai'i he played all 40 minutes. All-together, he has been on the court for 303 of the 49ers 330 minutes of action this season (.918).
FREE THROW SHOOTING ON THE RISE
·Season-Best .917 at Hawai'i
The 49ers are shooting .720 at the free throw line this season, including a season-best .917 (11-12) on Sunday at Hawai'i. In its last three outings the 49ers are shooting .800 (28-35) at the charity stripe. Individually, Brian Freeman has hit 10 of his last 12 charity tosses (.833) in the last three outings.
LONG-RANGE SHOOTING IMPROVING
·Shoot .500 at Hawai'i
The 49ers are shooting the better from three-point range. In the first four games of the season the 49ers shot .243 (18-74) from three-point range. In its last four games the 49ers have hit .462 (30-65) of its long-range attempts. The 49ers shot .500 (8-16) from long-range at Hawai'i and have shot .400 or better from three-point range in the past four games. Individually, Brian Freeman is 4-4 (1.000) in his last four outings, Donovan Morris is .667 (10-15) and Maurice Clady is .625 (5-8).
CLOSE CALLS ON THE ROAD
·Three Consecutive Close Outings
The 49ers have been close, but just haven't been able to get over the hump on the road this year. The 49ers are 0-5 in road games, but they have dropped three tight games. They fell in overtime at Pepperdine on November 21 and suffered back-to-back four-point losses in their last two outings at Saint Louis (52-48) and at Hawai'i (61-57). In the game at Washington, the score was tied 61-61 with 9:36 left on the clock.
MORRIS CONTINUES SCORING STREAK
·Averaged 23.0 Points Last Week
Junior guard Donovan Morris set a career-high with 22 points in the win over Loyola Marymount and then broke that in his next game with 24 points at Hawai'i. Morris continues to lead the 49ers in scoring at 15.4 points per game. He has scored in double digits in seven consecutive games since being held to just two points in the opener against BYU. Sunday at Hawai'i he led the 49ers with his 24 points and six rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Over the past seven games Morris is averaging 17.3 points per outing and is shooting .521 (38-73) from the field. Morris had a big game in the 49ers win over Idaho State on November 17. He tallied 20 points and added 10 rebounds, for his first double-double as a collegiate player. Morris, who has hit 10 rebounds twice this season, is second in rebounding at 6.4 per outing. He is shooting an impressive .810 (34-42) at the free throw line and in his last three outings he is shooting .667 (10-15) from three-point range.
FREEMAN CONTINUES TO SHINE
·Double-Double vs. LMU
Junior Brian Freeman continues to put up big numbers for the 49ers. He recorded his first double-double as a 49er against LMU as he had a career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Freeman is averaging 10.0 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game while shooting .674 (29-43) from the field. In the game at Saint Louis he finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists. At Washington he had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Freeman has hit double digits in scoring in five of the last seven games. In the last five games he is averaging 11.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while shooting .724 (21-29) from the field and .813 (13-16) at the free throw line. He leads the team with six blocked shots and 20 assists.
CLADY SHOWS SPARK
·10 Points and 7 Assists vs. LMU
Junior guard Maurice Clady had a big game vs. LMU. Clady, who had played a total of just 57 minutes in the first six games of the season and tallied only eight points, had a career-high 10 points, seven assists, three rebounds and three steals in 27 minutes. He also blocked a shot. Clady was a spark-plug for the 49ers off the bench against the Lions and played 15 minutes in the second half. At Hawai'i he started his second game as a 49er and responded with nine points, three rebounds and two assists. He was a perfect 3-3 from three-point range. Clady is currently averaging 3.4 points per game and is shooting .636 (7-11) from three-point range.
WILLIAMS RECORDS SEASON-HIGH'S
·10 Points at Washington
Junior Cornel Williams had a career-high 10 points at Washington, adding five rebounds and three assists. In the win over LMU he chipped in with five points and three rebounds, two on the offensive glass. At Hawai'i he finished with nine points and five rebounds in a career-best 29 minutes of action. Williams is averaging 5.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game for the 49ers. In the 49ers win over Idaho State he had seven points and a career-best seven rebounds.
CAREER-HIGH'S FOR PORTER
·12 Points at Washington
Redshirt freshman Darnell Porter recorded career-high's of 12 points and seven rebounds at Washington. Porter, who is averaging 6.1 points per game this year, has hit double digits in scoring twice this season (10 points at Pepperdine). Sunday at Hawai'i he came off the bench to contribute six points, four rebounds and two steals. Porter leads the team with his 13 steals.

·Ware and Phelps Sign With LBSU
Long Beach State Head Men's Basketball Coach Dan Monson announced that Eugene Phelps (F, 6-6, 200, Los Angeles, Calif., Taft HS) and Casper Ware (G, 5-9, 170, Cerritos, Calif., Gahr HS) signed a National Letters-of-Intent with the 49ers. Both Phelps and Ware were recently named to the Long Beach Press-Telegram's 29th Annual "Best In The West" third team. Phelps averaged 11.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game last season at Taft High School in Woodland Hills. He shot .738 (59-80) from the field and had 10 games in double figure scoring. He tallied 22 points vs. Chatsworth and had 23 points and 10 rebounds vs. Campbell Hall. Ware was a first team All-CIF I-AA selection at Gahr High School. Ware helped lead the Gladiators to a 24-5 mark and a 9-1 record in the San Gabriel Valley League. Gahr lost to St.John Bosco in the CIF-SS playoffs after advancing to the CIF quarterfinals his sophomore season. Ware was a second team All-CIF III-AA selection as a sophomore and first team All-CIF I-AA as a junior. He is a two-time first team All-San Gabriel Valley League selection and was the league's co-Player of the Year in 2007. Ware was a first team selection to the Long Beach Press-Telegram's "Dream Team" last season.
