Back On The Road Having finished their longest homestand of the year until hosting the Baden Thanksgiving classic, the 49ers head north for two matches against Pacific and UC Davis. The Beach starts with the surprising Tigers, who have been tough to beat at home this season. That match begins at 7 p.m. on Friday night, and then the team heads to Davis for a match with the Aggies Saturday night at seven. UC Davis is still looking for their first conference win, falling to 0-6 last week. Closing Fast Long Beach State took care of their end, beating Cal State Northridge 30-12, 30-22, 31-29 to enter into a three-way tie for first-place in the Big West at 4-1 with UC Irvine and Cal Poly. The Anteaters loss came to LBSU, and Mustangs account for the 49er's only loss, while Cal Poly was stunned on the road at Pacific accounting for the tie. With just the one match last week, the 49ers held the Matadors to .076 hitting on the night, and went to their heavy hitters, as Alexis Crimes had 15 kills and Quincy Verdin had 12 in the three-game win. Setter Nicole Vargas also accounted for a season-high seven kills to go along with 40 assists. Bright Lights, Big Stage Having already played six games against ranked opponents, the 49ers will welcome their next challenge by No. 24 Cal Poly at home on October 20. That match will be televised nationally by CSTV, which is carried by a number of cable providers as well as Dish Network and DirecTV. The match is the second meeting between the teams, as the Mustangs grabbed a win in San Luis Obispo earlier this year. The match will begin at 7 p.m., and will be the only chance to see the 49ers on television until any potential TV matches once the NCAA Tournament starts. Scouting Pacific Pacific has been a difficult team to scout, as the Tigers have seen some big wins this season, as well as some suspect losses. With a 4-2 conference record, the Tigers grabbed a 3-1 win at home against No. 24 Cal Poly, but also fell on the road to Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. In their non-conference schedule, the Tigers beach Loyola Marymoung and Portland on the road, but were swept by Ohio State and Colorado State in tournament play. Johanna Hilbers was the key figure in their upset win over Cal Poly, but Alexa Anderson leads the team with 205 kills on the year. Long Beach State vs. the Tigers In another long-time series, the 49ers hold a five game lead, solely on their recent performance of five straight wins dating back to October of 2004. The Tigers took the match in Stockton that year, but fell in the Walter Pyramid, and with two more season sweeps coming off the heels of that the Beach has a 29-24 series lead. The teams are tied in their career at Pacific, however, with each team coming away with 12 wins. Scouting UC Davis Entering their first full year in the conference after completing their transition into Division I athletics, the Aggies have struggled, posting a 3-14 overall record and a 0-6 conference mark. That included a 1-3 loss at UC Riverside last week, giving the Highlanders their first conference win in two years. Kayla Varney and Renee Ibekwe lead the team, averaging 3.35 and 3.37 kills per game. Carson Lowden handles the setting ditues for the team, averaging 11.32 assists per game. Long Beach State vs. the Aggies With only five matches in the all-time series, the 49ers have yet to drop a game, posting five 3-0 victories in the last three years. Last year, Michaela Hasalikova had a team high 12 kills in a three-game victory at the Walter Pyramid, as the 49ers grabbed a 30-24, 30-12, 30-23 win. In the last match in Davis, the Beach won 30-28, 30-20, 30-24 after Hasalikova, Alexis Crimes and Quincy Verdin all finished with double-digit kills in the three-game win. Record Watch With six total blocks in her one match against Cal State Northridge, Alexis Crimes passed Nique Crump for second in program history in total blocks with 522. She tied Crump in Block Assists in second, and now has one more solo block, and is ‘just four away from becoming the fourth 49er to record 100 solo blocks. She also is within striking distance of Danielle Scott for the top spot in total blocks and block assists, within 100 in both categories with a number of matches still to be played. Rank This! With a 10-5 record, the 49ers remain in the minds of voters as all five of the team's losses have come against teams in the top 25, and Long Beach State also holds a win against No. 21 Ohio. However, the Beach still remained just outside of the Top 25 this week, receiving 37 votes. The Beach now has seven of their 2007 opponents ranked in the Top 25. The return trip for Poly remains on the schedule, as well as a Thanksgiving weekend matchup against No. 5 Florida.
