FIRST TEE: The Long Beach State 49ers travel to Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown hosted by UNLV ... the three-round tournament will take place on Monday, Oct. 29-Wednesday, Oct. 31 at the Angel Park Golf Club ... there are a total of 18 teams participating: Arizona, BYU, Colorado State, Denver, Eastern Washington, Kent State, Long Beach State, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, SMU, Stanford, TCU, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UNLV and Washington ... Oklahoma State won last year's Las Vegas Showdown with a nine-under 855 ... Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M claimed the individual title with a seven-under 209 ... live scoring will be golfstat.com.
PLAYING IN THE DESSERT: Forty-Niners traveling to Las Vegas are Katy Barrett, Kylie Kimura, Erin Cylke, Reina Rogers and Lindsey McAtee ... Brenda Chhuor was originally slated to play but has been suffering from the flu for the past several days.
LAST OUTING: The 49ers finished the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in 15th place as they finished with a three-round score of 949 (328-306-315) ... Southern California was the overall winner as the Trojans finished 18-over 882 (296-291-295), followed by Arizona State (891) in second place ... Individually, Brenda Chhuor was the top 49er as she tied for 46th place with a 19-over 235 (81-75-79) ... Katy Barrett finished tied for 53rd with a 237 (80-81-76) and Kylie Kimura finished tied for 63rd with a 240 (82-77-81) ... Belen Mozo of Southern California and Alison Walshe of Arizona won the individual title as they both finished the tournament one-over 217.
EWART ON EDEAN IHLANFELDT: "I'm pleased the way they played," said 49er Head Coach Sue Ewart. "The first round kind of shot us in the foot but the last two rounds were really good and it proves to them that they're capable of playing at the same level. We're such a young team it's going to help us in the long run, we're making strides as we look forward to playing in Las Vegas."
THE COACH: A member of the United States Golf Association Rules of Golf Committee, Sue Ewart is entering her 12th season as the head coach of the 49er women's golf team ... in 2006 the 49ers received their first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA Championships .. the 49ers finished second at the 2006 Big West Championships ... this past year, 2007, the 49ers came in second place at the Big West Championships and junior Kay Hoey was selected as the Big West Golfer of the Year. Hoey advanced to the NCAA Championships where she tied for 46th place, earning second team All-America honors.
NEXT UP FOR THE BEACH: The 49ers will next be in action on Monday, Feb. 25 through Tuesday, Feb. 26, as they travel to Fresno for the Fresno State Invitational. |
