LONG BEACH, CA-- Senior Aaron Nixon scored a career-high 35 points to lead Long Beach State to a 101-65 win over UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference game at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers won their eighth consecutive game and improved to 10-4 overall and 1-0 in the Big West. Cecil Brown led the Gauchos (10-4, 2-1) with 11 points.
The 35 points by Nixon eclipsed his previous high of 33 points which he set last year at UC Davis. Nixon was 13-19 from the field, but an even more impressive 7-9 from three-point range. He also added four rebounds and three assists. The 49ers tied a school-record with their 17 made three's in the game (17-33) and the 101 points scored was a season-high, as were their 24 assists.
Senior guard Kevin Houston had a team-high seven assists to go along with his eight points with just one turnover. Long Beach committed just 11 turnovers and forced UCSB into 19 miscues.
"I thought we were very fortunate playing at home and we shot the bal extremely well," said 49er Head Coach Larry Reynolds. "It was one of those games where things were going our way. Aaron shot the ball tremendously tonight. Our kids got him the ball when he was feeling it as well. We played off of what we thought was a favorable match-up for us. Sometimes you get a game where it's like this. We just need to put this behind us. We have Cal Poly coming in on Saturday. Things went well for us and not so well for Santa Barbara."
Long Beach shot .545 (36-66) from the field overall, out-rebounded the Gauchos 34-31 and had a season-high 24 assists to just 11 turnovers. Kejuan Johnson added 15 oints and Sterling Byrd had 11 points and seven rebounds. Thirteen players saw action in the game, with 11 scoring. Freshman Chris Peys scored his first points as a 49er knocking down two three's and fellow freshman Andrew Fleming had two points and a blocked shot.
Long Beach never trailed in the contest, jumping to an 15-4 lead 5:30 into the contest and expanding it to 37-11 with 6:20 left after two free throws by Byrd. The Gauchos pulled to within 50-27 at the half on a three by James Powell.
The 49ers kept up the pressure in the second half pushing the advantage to 75-41 with 12:43 left after a three by Johnson. The biggest lead of the game was 40 points, 101-60.
Long Beach will next be in action on Saturday, January 6 when they host Cal Poly at 7 pm at the Walter Pyramid.
