THE RECORDS •49ers Look To Continue Home Win Streak Long Beach State is 13-6 overall and 4-2 in the Big West Conference after dropping an 88-84 decision at UC Irvine on January 25. This week the 49ers host Cal State Northridge on Thursday and Pacific on Saturday. The Matadors are 10-10 overall and 3-4 in the Big West. Pacific is 7-12 overall and 3-3 in the Big West. Saturday's game vs. the Tigers will be televised live on FSN Prime Ticket at 4:30 pm.
THE COACH •16-7 Last Two Seasons In February And March Larry Reynolds (UC Riverside, 1976) is 52-81 (.391) in his fifth year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Overall, Reynolds is 162-116 (.583) in his ninth year as a collegiate head coach.
THE SERIES •49ers Lead CSUN Series, 24-17 •49ers Lead UOP Series, 46-32 The 49ers lead in their series with Cal State Northridge by a 24-17 count. The Matadors won the last meeting, 90-83 on January 13 at CSUN. The 49ers swept the series the previous season winning 84-73 in Long Beach and 101-80 at Northridge. The 49ers lead their series with Pacific by a 46-32 count, but the Tigers have won the last seven meetings. Pacific won three games over the 49ers last year, winning 78-72 in Long Beach, 87-78 in Stockton and 78-70 in the championship game of the Big West Tournament. The last 49er win came on February 19, 2003 in Long Beach, a 70-61 49er triumph.
BEACH TO RETIRE HARRIS JERSEY •Saturday's Ceremony At Halftime At halftime of the February 3 game against Pacific, Long Beach State Athletics will retire jersey No. 30, which was worn by 49er great Lucious Harris (1989-93). Harris is the 49ers career scoring leader at 2,312 points and he is also the career scoring leader in the Big West Conference. He recently retired from his professional basketball career, which consisted of 12 years playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was a two-time first team All-Big West selection and led the team in scoring four consecutive years. As a senior in the 1992-93 season, he averaged 23.1 points per game and scored a school-record 739 points.
BEACH SLIPS UP AT UCI •Fall Behind 41-16 in First Half For the second straight year the 49ers fell behind big in the first half at UC Irvine, but unlike last year, the 49ers couldn't pull off the comeback. UCI led 41-16 at the 7:25 mark before Long Beach pulled to within 49-33 at the half. The 49ers got to within one point three times, the last with 32 seconds remaining (82-81), but couldn't pull off the win. Kejuan Johnson led the 49ers with 23 points, Aaron Nixon added 19 and Sterling Byrd 12. The 49ers were 13-31 from three-point range, but were out-rebounded 37-29. UCI had six players in double digits, led by 15 points and nine rebounds from Mark Kelley. UCI shot .517 (30-58) from the field for the game and were 19-26 at the free throw line.
CS NORTHRIDGE FACTS •Matadors Drop Two At Home Cal State Northridge is 10-10 overall and 3-4 in the Big West, but fell twice at home last week. Thursday they lost to UCSB 67-57 and Saturday they lost to Cal Poly 79-68. Since beating the 49ers on January 13, the Matadors have lost three of their last four games. Against Cal Poly, Calvin Chitwood led the way with 13 points while guard Terrell Jones added 11. On the season, Jonathan Heard leads CSUN at 15.3 points per game. He is shooting an impressive .485 (116-239) from the field and averaging 5.8 rebounds per game. Chitwood checks in at 12.9 points and 4.5 boards per game while shooting .524 from the field and .860 (49-57) at the line. They are the only Matadors in double digits. As a team Northridge is averaging 77.5 points per game and shooting .456 from the field. Matador opponents are averaging 76.4 points per game.
PACIFIC FACTS •Tigers Go 1-1 At Home Last Week Pacific is 7-12 overall and 3-3 in the Big West Conference. Last week in Stockton the Tigers defeated Cal Poly (66-43), but lost to UCSB (70-62). In the win over Cal Poly, Anthony Esparza had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Three others scored 12 points. In the UCSB loss, Solomon Horsechief had 17 points as the Tigers shot just .340 (18-53) from the field. On the year the Tigers are led by Anthony Brown at 15.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Steffan Johnson is second at 10.6 points per outing and Michael White is third at 7.8. As a team the Tigers are averaging 65.1 points per game and shooting .433 from the field. UOP opponents are averaging 68.9 points and are shooting .465 from the field.
OFFENSIVE OUTBURST •49ers Hit 101 Points Vs. UCSB The 49ers hit 100 points for the first time this season, racking up 101 points in the win over UCSB on January 4. Last year the 49ers hit the century mark three times en route to averaging an NCAA-best 83.3 points per game. Long Beach has put up some impressive numbers in Big West Conference play thus far. The 49ers lead the league averaging 89.8 points per game in conference outings. The 49ers have scored 95 or more points in three of their six league games. Overall the 49ers are averaging 77.2 points per game.
THE BEACH ON TV •Next TV Game On Feb. 3 vs. Pacific The 49ers will be on television a total of seven times during the regular season, with the opportunity of four more telecasts making the airwaves. The next televised game will be on Saturday, February 3 when the 49ers host Pacific on FSN Prime Ticket. Long Beach is currently 2-2 on TV this year.
THREE-POINT STREAK •162 Games And Counting The 49ers have connected on at least on three-pointer in every game Larry Reynolds has coached at Long Beach State (133 games). The 49ers have hit at least one three-pointer in 162 consecutive games, dating back to the 2001-02 season. The last time Long Beach State didn't hit a three in a game was in the 2001-02 season opener against Western Michigan (11/15/01) where The Beach was 0-9. Last year the 49ers finished 21st in the nation averaging 8.53 made three's per game. Their 256 three's in 2005-06 were a new school record, shattering the old mark of 200.
MORE LONG-RANGE NOTES •Shoot .524 vs. Titans The 49ers are starting to find their rhythm from beyond the three-point line. Long Beach is shooting an impressive .444 (67-151) from three-point range in Big West Conference games, tops in the league. Against CS Fullerton the 49ers were 11-21 from long-range for a season-best .524 percentage. Against UC Riverside they were 7-15 (.467). In the win over UCSB on January 4 the 49ers shot .515 (17-33) from beyond the arc. The 17 made three's tied a school-record. Long Beach had hit double digits in made three-pointers seven times this season and all seven of those efforts have come in the past 12 games. Overall the 49ers are shooting .360 (153-425) from three-point range on the year. Last year Long Beach connected on .355 (256-721) of its long-range attempts.
ASSISTS VS. TURNOVERS •More Assists Than TO's in Four of Last Six The 49ers have had more assists than turnovers in four of its last six games. On January 20 vs. UC Riverside the 49ers finished with 18 assists to just 11 turnovers. Against CS Fullerton the 49ers had 12 assists and a season-low seven turnovers. The 49ers also accomplished that feat vs. UCSB (24 to 11) and Cal Poly (16 to 10). In Big West games the 49ers are averaging 16.0 assists per game compared to 11.7 turnovers for a +4.3 ratio, best in the league. Ten times this year the 49ers have had more turnovers than assists in a game, but that has only occurred three times (Manhattan, at CSUN, at UCI) in the past 10 games.
TURNOVER MARGIN •Fewer Turnovers Than Opponents Through the first 19 games of the season the 49ers have committed less turnovers than its opponent 14 times. The 49ers are 11-3 when they commit less turnovers than their opponent. Over the past 11 games the 49ers have had less turnovers than their opponents in each contest. The last time LBSU recorded a deficit in that area was on December 7 vs. Pepperdine when Long Beach had 20 turnovers and the Waves committed 17. On the year, the 49ers are averaging 14.5 turnovers per game while forcing 17.2 (+2.7).
NIXON GOES FOR 35 •Third 30-Plus Game In 49er Career Senior Aaron Nixon put up a career-high 35 points vs. UCSB on January 4, his third 30-plus outing as a 49er. Last year at UC Davis (2/25) he scored 33 points and against CS Fullerton in the Big West Tournament quarterfinals he scored 31 points. The 35 point outing tied for 17th-best on the LBSU single game chart. The school-record for points in a game is 45, set by Ed Ratleff vs. Saint Mary's on December 10, 1970.
LIGHTNING DOES STRIKE TWICE •Nixon Has Two Game-Winners To Credit 49er senior guard Aaron Nixon has proven that lightning can strike twice. Nixon has knocked down two game-winning three-point shots at the buzzer to lift Long Beach State to victories. The first came on March 10, 2006 in the semi-finals of the Big West Tournament as he knocked down a three from the far corner lifting the 49ers to a 75-73 victory. The latest heroics came on December 22, 2006 at Loyola Marymount as he hit a 35-foot shot at the buzzer to lift Long Beach to a 66-65 victory.
WIN STREAK •Tenth-Best In History The recent nine-game win streak tied for 10th best in 49er history. The last time the 49ers won nine games in a row was during the 1989-90 campaign under Joe Harrington. The streak ran from Feb. 12 through March 10. The streak ended on March 11 with a 92-74 loss to UNLV in the Big West Tournament. The school-record streak is 19 games set during the 1969-70 season under Jerry Tarkanian.
DOWN THE STRETCH •49ers Closing Out Games The 49ers are 9-0 when leading at the half and 2-0 when tied at the half. But, when leading a game with five minutes remaining, the 49ers are a perfect 13-0. In five of their six losses the 49ers were behind with five minutes remaining, with four of the deficits being in double digits. Against Air Force the game was tied 52-52 when the clock hit five minutes remaining.
HOUSTON RANKS NO. 5 •Moves Ahead Of Lucious Harris Senior point guard Kevin Houston (Highland) has recorded a team-high 85 assists this season and has jumped to the No. 5 spot on the 49er career chart for assists with 369. He moved past Lucious Harris into the number five spot. Currently standing in the No. 4 spot is Ed Ratleff with 410 assists.
MORE ON HOUSTON •Outstanding Assist-to-Turnover Ratio Senior guard Kevin Houston had accumulated a team-high 85 assists this season compared to just 48 turnovers. But, in his last 10 games he has 48 assists and just 15 turnovers. In the win over CS Fullerton he had six assists (14 points) and no turnovers. In the win over UCSB he had seven assists and just one turnover. Houston is currently third in the Big West at 4.47 assists per game and first in assist/turnover ratio at 1.77. In Big West Conference games he ranks second in assists at 5.17 per game and first in assist/turnover ratio at 3.10.
LAST YEAR AGAINST THE TIGERS •49ers Drop All Three To Pacific Last year the 49ers were 0-3 vs. the Pacific Tigers. Pacific won 78-72 in Long Beach (1/13), 87-78 in Stockton (2/4) and 78-70 in the championship game of the Big West Tournament on March 11. In Long Beach, the Tigers got 20 points from Christian Maraker and Johnny Gray to defeat the 49ers 78-72. Aaron Nixon had 17 points and Kejuan Johnson 15. In Stockton, Anthony Esparza had 21 points and 13 rebounds and Gray added 18 points as the Tigers won 87-78. Shawn Hawkins led the 49ers with 22 points and Nixon added 11. In the Big West Tournament, the Tigers won 78-70 as Maraker had 23 points and 11 rebounds and Gray added 21. Hawkins led the 49ers with 27 and Nixon added 17. The 49ers shot just .333 (25-75) from the field in the game while the Tigers shot a blistering .592 (29-49).
HOME COOKING •Beach 8-0 At Home This Year The 49ers are 8-0 at home this season and have won their last nine games (dating back to last season) at the Walter Pyramid. Long Beach is averaging 86.1 points per game at home. Since February of 2005, the 49ers are 22-4 at home. Overall in the Walter Pyramid, Long Beach State is 110-58 (.655). The 100th home win came on February 15, 2006 vs. CS Fullerton.
DOUBLING UP •Six Players In Double Digits In the win at UC Davis (12/28) the 49ers had six players hit for double digits, a season-high. Saturday vs. UC Riverside they did it again (Houston 17, Ricks 15, Nixon 14, Johnson 12, Dawson 11, Byrd 10). Last year the 49ers had one game where they had seven players tally double digits, and that was on February 18 at Manhattan (Hawkins 25, Houston 17, Johnson 16, Hodges 14, Darby 13, Nixon 11, Dawson 10). They had six players hit that mark on March 2 in the home win over UC Riverside. Six times this season the 49ers had four players score in double digits (CS Fullerton, at CS Northridge, Manhattan, at San Jose State, Pepperdine, vs. San Jose State) and last week at UCI five 49ers hit double digits.
ROAD WINS •Four True Road Wins This Year The 57-53 win at Maryland-Baltimore County (Dec. 3) was the first "true" road win for the 49ers this year. They followed that up with a 76-67 win at San Jose State, a 66-65 win at Loyola Marymount, and an 89-75 win at UC Davis. After the loss at UC Irvine, the 49ers are 4-5 on the road. The 49ers are 1-1 on neutral sites (8-0 at home). Last year the 49ers lost their first six road games before they downed Cal Poly 79-66 on January 9. Long Beach went 8-1 in true road games from January 9 through March 4 of last season, finishing 8-7 on the road and 2-1 at neutral sites (Big West Tournament).
DEFENSIVE STATS •Opponents Shooting .429 From Field Only three teams have shot .500 or better from the field against the 49ers this season. Cal State Northridge shot a season-best .536 (30-56) from the field against the 49ers. But, overall the 49ers have held six opponents below .400 and three more below .450. Overall, opponents are shooting just .429 from the field.
BIG WEST STATS •Averaging 89.8 Points Per Game In Big West Conference games the 49ers have turned up its offense. Long beach is first in league games in scoring (89.8), scoring margin (+12.7), field goal percentage (.478), three-point field goal percentage (.444), steals (7.83), three-point field goals made (11.17) and turnover margin (+5.00). Individually, Aaron Nixon is second in scoring at 20.5 points per game against Big West opponents. Kejuan Johnson is third at 19.8 and Kevin Houston 14th at 11.5. Houston is first in assist/turnover ratio (3.10), Nixon is first in three-point field goals made per game (3.83) and Johnson is first in steals (2.00).
FALL SIGNEES •49ers Sign Three The 49ers signed three players in the early signing period in November. Signing with The Beach were: Brandon Johnson (F, 6-8, 210, Vancouver, WA, Lamar CC, Mountain View HS), Greg Russell (G, 5-6, 170, Santa Cruz, CA, West Valley JC, Santa Cruz HS) and Bryan Emanuel (G, 6-3, 185, Bellflower, CA, Mayfair HS). Russell led West Valley to a 33-4 mark and an appearance in the State JC Championship Game. He averaged 7.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per outing. Emanuel is a senior at Mayfair High School where he was a first team All-Suburban League selection last season after averaging 11.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Johnson averaged 11.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game at Lamar (CO) CC last season.
