Dirtbag Alums Shutout Current Squad, 1-0 LONG BEACH, CA-- Seven drafted pitchers, including four Major Leaguers from a year ago combined on a seven-hit shutout, as former All-American Abe Alvarez picked up the win with a scoreless fifth and the Pro Alumni defeated the current Long Beach State team 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. It was the first time the Pro Alumni have beaten their younger breathren. Former first round pick Evan Longoria drove in the only game of the game, driving in fellow first round pick Troy Tulowitzki from first in the sixth with an RBI double. Andre Lamontagne took the loss, giving up one run over two innings of relief work. Shane Peterson and Jason Corder each had two hits for the current team. Likely weekend starter Manny McElroy went the first four innings for the current team, giving up one hit over four shutout innings. Bryan Shaw struck out two in the ninth. After the Pro's ran out of pitching, freshman Jason Markovitz came on in the ninth, gave up a one-out double to Corder, before getting a flyout and a groundout end the contest. The current squad had chances early in the contest to score, loading the bases with three singles in the second. A double play ball ended things after Longoria saved a run by keeping the ball on the infield on an infield single, after grabbing the one-hopper behind the third base bag to load the bases. The current team also put together two hits in the third, only to have Peterson get picked off second base by Giants prospect and catcher Todd Jennings. The Dirtbags open up the regular season with USC next weekend, with games on Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at noon at Dedeaux Field and Saturday's game at Blair Field at 1 p.m. |
