THE RECORDS
·49ers Have Won Seven In A Row
Long Beach State won its seventh consecutive game last Saturday claiming a 74-61 win at home over Manhattan College. The Beach is now 9-4 on the season and begins Big West Conference play this week hosting UC Santa Barbara on Thursday night and Cal Poly on Saturday evening. UCSB is 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big West, while Cal Poly stands at 6-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Larry Reynolds (UC Riverside, 1976) is 48-79 (.378) in his fifth year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Overall, Reynolds is 158-114 (.581) in his ninth year as a collegiate head coach.

The 49ers lead their series with UC Santa Barbara by a 50-49 count. This will be the 100th meeting between the two schools. The Gauchos have won three in a row over the 49ers and five of the last six. Last year UCSB won in Santa Barbara 77-74 and then won in Long Beach 81-78. The 49ers lead their series with Cal Poly by a 29-25 count. Long Beach has won three in a row over the Mustangs. Last year The Beach swept Cal Poly winning 79-66 in San Luis Obispo and 69-66 in Long Beach. The 49ers have won the last three meetings with the Mustangs in the Walter Pyramid.
BEACH DOWNS THE JASPERS
·Nixon, Darby Lead Second Half Comeback
Trailing 32-30 at the half, and 43-41 with 15:39 left, the 49ers went on a 13-0 run over the next six-plus minutes to take control of the game 54-43. The 49ers held on from there to defeat Manhattan 74-61. Aaron Nixon scored 15 points, 13 in the second half, and Louis Darby had a season-high 11 points for Long Beach State. Kejuan Johnson added 13 points and seven rebounds and Kevin Houston had 11 points as the 49ers shot a season-best .818 (27-33) at the free throw line and limited the Jaspers to a .328 (21-64) field goal percentage.
49ERS DEFEAT UC DAVIS
·Six Players Hit Double Digits
The 49ers had six players score in double digits, led by Aaron Nixon and Mark Dawson with 16, as they rolled past UC Davis 89-75 on Thursday evening on the road. The 16 points by Dawson ties his career-high and he also added five rebounds. Kejuan Johnson and Kevin Houston each scored 14 points, Sterling Byrd had 12 and Louis Darby 10. The 49ers were 10-21 (.476) from three-point range in the game and committed a season-low nine turnovers. Long Beach forced UC Davis in 22 miscues and the 49ers responded by scoring 38 points off Davis turnovers. The 49ers trailed 19-17 with 9:32 in the first half, but then went on a 13-0 run to grab a 30-19 lead. In the second half Long Beach led by double digits throughout, with its biggest lead being 20 points (74-54).
UCSB FACTS
·Gauchos Lead Big West at 2-0
UC Santa Barbara has been the surprise team thus far in the Big West as they are 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big West. Last weekend the Gauchos opened up conference play at home defeating UC Riverside (73-65) and CS Fullerton (83-76). UCSB is 5-1 on the road this year with wins at UNLV (79-76) and San Francisco (74-69). Junior Alex Harris leads the team at 21.4 points per game and is shooting an impressive .477 (31-65) from three-point range. Junior Chris Devine is next at 16.5 points per outing while leading the squad in rebounding at 6.9 per game. Devine is shooting .562 (86-153) from the field. As a team, the Gauchos are averaging 75.9 points per game and shooting .495 from the field. UCSB opponents are averaging 67.4 points and shooting just .411.

·Mustangs 1-1 In Big West Action
Cal Poly comes into the week at 6-6 overall and 1-1 in Big West play after losing at home to CS Fullerton (99-91) and defeating UC Riverside (67-64). In the win over UCR, Tyler McGinn led the way with 18 points while Derek Stockalper and Titus Sheldon each had 13. On the year, Stockalper leads the Mustangs at 12.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Guard Dawin Whiten is averaging 12.3 points per game and McGinn is third at 9.3 ppg. As a team the Mustangs are averaging 72.5 points per game and shooting .454 from the field while their opponents are averaging 72.9 points and shooting .446.
CONFERENCE OPENERS
·49ers Have Lost 3 Of Last 4
The 49ers have dropped three of its last four Big West Conference opening contests. For the fourth year in a row Long Beach begins league play with a game against UCSB. The last two years the 49ers lost at UCSB, beginning league play at 0-1. In the 2003-04 campaign the 49ers defeated the Gauchos 63-62 at the Walter Pyramid on a three-pointer at the buzzer by Louis Darby.

·Next TV Game On Jan. 18 vs. CS Fullerton
The 49ers will be on television a total of seven times during the regular season, with the opportunity of five more telecasts making the airwaves. The next televised game will be on Thursday, January 18 when the 49ers host CS Fullerton on KVMD. The game will be televised live on FSN Prime Ticket. Long Beach is currently 1-1 on TV this year.

·156 Games And Counting
The 49ers have connected on at least on three-pointer in every game Larry Reynolds has coached at Long Beach State (127 games). The 49ers have hit at least one three-pointer in 156 consecutive games, dating back to the 2001-02 season. The last time Long Beach State didn't hit a three in a game was in the 2001-02 season opener against Western Michigan (11/15/01) where The Beach was 0-9. Last year the 49ers finished 21st in the nation averaging 8.53 made three's per game. Their 256 three's in 2005-06 were a new school record, shattering the old mark of 200.

·Shot .476 In Win At UC Davis
The 49ers are starting to find their rhythm from beyond the three-point line. Last Thursday at UC Davis the 49ers shot a season-best .476 (10-21) from long-range. In its last three games the 49ers are 26-65 (.400) from three-point range, hitting double digits in made three's two consecutive games (11-of-27 in win at LMU on December 22). Overall the 49ers are shooting just .314 (86-274) from three-point range on the year. Last year Long Beach connected on .355 (256-721) of its long-range attempts.
LIGHTNING DOES STRIKE TWICE
·Nixon Has Two Game-Winners To Credit
49er senior guard Aaron Nixon has proven that lightning can strike twice. Nixon has knocked down two game-winning three-point shots at the buzzer to lift Long Beach State to victories. The first came on March 10, 2006 in the semi-finals of the Big West Tournament as he knocked down a three from the far corner lifting the 49ers to a 75-73 victory. The latest heroics came on December 22, 2006 at Loyola Marymount as he hit a 35-foot shot at the buzzer to lift Long Beach to a 66-65 victory.
SEVEN IN A ROW
·Beach Allowing 66.6 ppg
The 49ers are riding a seven-game winning streak after its 74-61 win over Manhattan College on Saturday. The seven-game streak ties for the longest under Head Coach Larry Reynolds. Last year the 49ers had a seven-game winning streak (which was ended by Pacific in the Big West Tournament Championship game). During the seven-game streak the 49ers are allowing just 66.6 points per game, holding two opponents to 55 points or less. The 49ers have averaged 76.1 points per game in that same span.
HOUSTON RANKS NO. 6
·Moves Ahead Of Rick Aberegg
Senior point guard Kevin Houston (Highland) has recorded a team-high 54 assists this season and has jumped to the No. 6 spot on the 49er career chart for assists with 338. He moved past Bobby Sears into the number six spot. He needs five more assists to pass Lucious Harris (342) in the number five spot.
LAST YEAR AGAINST UCSB
·Gauchos Sweep 49ers
Last year the Gauchos swept the 49ers, winning two, three-point decisions. On January 7 at UCSB the Gauchos won 77-74. Chris Devine had 20 points and Alex Harris 17 as UCSB shot .500 (26-52) from the field and 20-31 at the line. Jibril Hodges led the 49ers with 19 points and Shawn Hawkins and Aaron Nixon each had 12. The 49ers were 11-33 from three-point range, but were 9-14 at the free throw line. In the rematch at the Walter Pyramid on February 11, the Gauchos got 23 points from Cecil Brown and 14 points and 11 boards from Devine in an 81-78 victory. Hodges scored 24 for LBSU and Kevin Houston added 14. Long Beach led 76-72 with 1:42 remining, but UCSB closed out the game on a 9-2 run to win.
LAST YEAR AGAINST CAL POLY
·49ers Sweep Mustangs
Last year the 49ers swept two games from Cal Poly. On January 9 Long Beach bounced back from a 36-27 halftime deficit to win 79-66, outscoring the Mustangs 52-30 in the second half. Aaron Nixon had 15 points and Shawn Hawkins 15 points and 11 boards. Derek Stockalper led Cal Poly with 18 points. Long Beach shot .586 (17-29) from the field in the second half. On February 9 in Long Beach, Louis Darby had a season-high 15 points to lead the 49ers to a 69-66 win. Cal Poly led 37-23 at the half, and 59-44 with 8:14 left before the 49ers rallied. Long Beach out-scored the Mustangs 25-7 over the final eight minutes of the game, taking the lead for good at 1:38 on a three-pointer by Kevin Houston. Stockalper led the Mustangs with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
JOHNSON'S RETURN
·Missed 3 Games Due To Broken Nose
Senior guard Kejuan Johnson, who missed three games due to a broken nose suffered on November 22 (UCLA, Temple, UMBC), got the o.k. to practice and play on Monday, December 4. Since that time he has started in the past six games. During that span he is averaging 15.0 points, and 4.2 assists per game while shooting .962 (25-26) at the free throw line. His first game back was on December 7 vs. Pepperdine where he finished with 15 points, adding five rebounds and six assists. In the win at San Jose State he had a career-high tying 20 points. He had hit double digits in points in all six games.
DOUBLING UP
·Six Players In Double Digits
Last Thursday at UC Davis the 49ers had six players hit for double digits, a season-high. Last year the 49ers had one game where they had seven players tally double digits, and that was on February 18 at Manhattan (Hawkins 25, Houston 17, Johnson 16, Hodges 14, Darby 13, Nixon 11, Dawson 10). They had six players hit that mark on March 2 in the home win over UC Riverside. Four times this season the 49ers had four players score in double digits (Manhattan, at San Jose State, Pepperdine, vs. San Jose State).
NIXON OUTBURST
·Three 20-Point Games
Senior Aaron Nixon, who leads the team in scoring at 15.7 points per game, had eclipsed the 20-point mark three times this season. He tallied a season-high 23 points in the win at UMBC, had 22 vs. CS Bakersfield and 21 against Pepperdine. Last season Nixon had five games where he scored 20-plus points.
SEASON-HIGH'S
·Darby And Dawson Hit Season-Best's
Louis Darby and Mark Dawson both had strong outings last Thursday at UC Davis, with each reaching a season-high in points. Darby had 10 points against the Aggies, besting his seven-point outing at USC. He then bested that mark with 11 points last Saturday against Manhattan. Dawson scored 16 points in the win, besting his 11-point game at UMBC. Dawson also tied his previous career-high with his 16 points. Last year in the game at UC Davis (Feb. 25) he had 16 points, adding eight rebounds and six blocked shots.
SWEET CHARITY
·Six Strong Outings At The Line
The 49ers have shot a combined .753 (110-146) at the free throw line in its last six games. They shot a season-best .818 (27-3) in the win over Manhattan last Saturday and have shot .710 or better in five of its last six outings. In its first seven games of the year the 49ers were shooting just .586 (82-140) at the line.

·Season-low 8 Attempts at LMU
The 49ers were just 5-8 at the free throw line in the win at Loyola Marymount on December 22. The five made charity tosses and eight attempts were season-lows. But, in the December 30 win over Manhattan the 49ers reached season-high's for free throw makes (27), attempts (33) and percentage (.818).
BLOCK PARTY
·Season-High 9 Blocks at UMBC
The 49ers had a season-high nine blocked shots in the win at UMBC. The nine blocks was three off the school-record of 12 set on December 1, 1998 vs. CS Dominguez Hills. Individually, Mark Dawson had a career-high tying six blocks in the contest. The school-record of seven blocks, was set by Terrance O'Kelley against Nevada on January 10, 1994.
ROAD WINS
·Four True Road Wins This Year
The 57-53 win at Maryland-Baltimore County (Dec. 3) was the first "true" road win for the 49ers this year. They followed that up with a 76-67 win at San Jose State, a 66-65 win at Loyola Marymount, and last Thursday's 89-75 win at UC Davis, improving their mark to 4-3 on the road. The 49ers are 1-1 on neutral sites (3-0 at home). Last year the 49ers lost their first six road games before they downed Cal Poly 79-66 on January 9. Long Beach went 8-1 in true road games from January 9 through March 4 of last season, finishing 8-7 on the road and 2-1 at neutral sites (Big West Tournament).

UC Davis was the first 49er opponent to shoot .500 or better from the field. The Aggies shot .500 (25-50) overall. The 49ers have held six opponents below .400 and two more below .450. In the last seven games opponents are shooting just .333 (47-141) from long-range and .405 (169-417) overall from the field.
HOME STREAK
·Beach 4-0 At Home This Year
The 49ers are 4-0 at home this season and have won their last five games (dating back to last season) at the Walter Pyramid. Long Beach is averaging 79.5 points per game and home while allowing 69.0 Since February of 2005, the 49ers are 18-4 at home. Six of the next eight games will be at home.

The 49ers signed three players in the early signing period in November. Signing with The Beach were: Brandon Johnson (F, 6-8, 210, Vancouver, WA, Lamar CC, Mountain View HS), Greg Russell (G, 5-6, 170, Santa Cruz, CA, West Valley JC, Santa Cruz HS) and Bryan Emanuel (G, 6-3, 185, Bellflower, CA, Mayfair HS). Russell led West Valley to a 33-4 mark and an appearance in the State JC Championship Game. He averaged 7.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per outing. Emanuel is a senior at Mayfair High School where he was a first team All-Suburban League selection last season after averaging 11.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Johnson averaged 11.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game at Lamar (CO) CC last season.
