LONG BEACH, CA – Quincy Verdin's 14 kills and a furious game three rally lifted the Long Beach State women's volleyball team to a sweep over St. Mary's on Thursday night from the Walter Pyramid. Game scores were 30-25, 30-23, 31-29.
Long Beach State improved to 6-2, while St. Mary's fell to 3-4.
Robin Miramontes posted 12 kills and Alexis Crimes netted 11 kills to highlight the top attack leaders for The Beach. Dyanne Lawlor had 36 assists and Iris Murray registered 11 digs to round out the statistical leaders of the match. Taylor Groess had 14 kills for the Gaels in the losing effort.
LBSU rallied midway thru the first set and took a 1-0 lead in the match after a 30-25 victory. Long Beach State recovered from a 14-9 deficit with a 9-2 run to take an 18-16 lead after a Crimes kill. The 49ers continued to pull away from the Gaels at 25-20 after an SMC service error, and capped of the stanza with two straight Verdin kills for the victory. Both Crimes and Verdin were hot offensively with six kills and seven kills respectively.
The 49ers rallied for a second time in the match, this time in game two, and came away with a 30-23 victory. SMC held a 14-10 advantage after a Groess kill, before LBSU went on a 10-4 run, capped off by a St. Mary's attack error, to take a 20-18 lead. Long Beach State added to its lead late and finished the game on a Miramontes kill. The 49ers had a balanced offensive attack, registering a .395 clip (19-4-38). Miramontes had six kills in the game to raise her match total to 10.
Long Beach State saved the best rally for last in the third game, as the 49ers fought off three straight game points to tie the game at 29-29. A Miramontes kill and a Crimes service ace gave LBSU the 31-29 win, and 3-0 match victory.
