Hornets Sting Long Beach in Three Sac State Records 19 Blocks

SACRAMENTO, CA – The No. 25-ranked Long Beach State women's volleyball team suffered its third loss of the season after a 3-0 setback at Sacramento State on Thursday night. Game scores were 30-24, 30-25, 30-27 in favor of the Hornets.
The 49ers fell to 8-3 on the season, while Sacramento State improved to 13-4. This was the first loss in school history to Sacramento State.
Sophomore Quincy Verdin led Long Beach State with 10 kills in the losing effort. Alexis Crimes and Mariko Crum both had seven kills as well for LB. Iris Murray registered a match-high 21 digs, and Nicole Vargas recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 32 assists and 16 digs. The 49ers committed 27 attack errors and hit just .088 for the match. Atlee Hubbard led the Hornets with 18 kills. Sacramento State hit just .205 for the match, but patrolled the net with a decisive 19-9 advantage in blocks.
The Hornets opened game one with a 7-3 lead, forcing the 49ers to call a timeout. Sacramento State pushed its lead to eight (17-9) after a Jennifer Ferguson kill, and closed out the 49ers, 30-24, on a Hubbard kill.
Long Beach State held an early lead in the second set, 8-4, courtesy of a Hornet attack error. After a Sacramento State timeout, the Hornets proceeded to tie the game at 10-10 after another Hubbard kill. The Hornets unlocked a 16-16 tie and maintained a two-point cushion towards the end of the stanza, before opening a larger lead late for the eventual win.
It was another tight battle in the third set, as neither team could gain a sizeable lead. The 49ers squared the stanza at 20-20 after a Crimes kill, before the Hornets went on a 4-1 run to build a 24-21 lead after a 49er attack error. Long Beach State could not recover and fell 30-27.
LBSU travels to UC Davis on Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m., before returning home to open conference play.
