Long Beach Ousts Rebels from Walter Pyramid Crimes Has 12 Blocks; Vargas Posts Double-Double
September 15, 2006 Box Score LONG BEACH, CA – Alexis Crimes recorded a season-high 12 blocks, and Mischa Hasalikova hit .542 to lead the Long Beach State women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over UNLV on Friday night. Game scores were 30-32, 30-19, 30-16, 30-19.
Long Beach State improved to 8-2 on the season, while UNLV fell to 8-3.
Hasalikova posted a career-best 15 kills on 24 swings (two errors), while Crimes added 10 kills. Nicole Vargas registered her fifth double-double of the season with 50 assists and 13 digs, while directing the 49er offense to a .315 hitting percentage. Robin Miramontes posted her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs. Naomi Washington and Quincy Verdin combined for 22 kills, and Iris Murray tallied a team-best 14 digs.
Maria Aladjova led UNLV with 13 kills in the losing effort. The Rebels only mustered a .099 attack percentage for the entire match (51-36-152).
UNLV almost squandered game one, but came away with a 32-30 victory. Down 29-25, Long Beach State rallied with four straight points to even the game at 29-29 thanks to a Crimes kill. The Rebels had game point once more at 30-29 after a 49er attack error, before another Crimes kill evened the set at 30-30. UNLV countered with two straight Brittani Lumsden kills for the game victory. Neither team hit well, as both hit under .200, in the stanza, and blocks were even at six apiece.
Long Beach State's aggressive offensive attack in the second game proved beneficial, as the 49ers evened the match after a 30-19 victory. LBSU built a commanding 10-2 lead, after a Verdin kill, and led by as many as 10 points (22-12), before winning by 11 points. The 49ers registered a blistering .452 attack percentage (17-3-31), while limiting the Rebels to just a .054 clip (10-8-37). Hasalikova tallied four kills in the game as well for The Beach.
The 49ers put their offense into overdrive and cruised to a 30-16 game three victory. Long Beach State committed just one attack error in the game for a .500 clip (15-1-28). The Rebels continued to slide offensively, and managed just a .033 attack percentage (10-9-30). LBSU built a 15-3 lead and never let the Rebels gain any rhythm the rest of the way for the 14-point victory.
LBSU again jumped out to a sizeable margin at 9-1 in the fourth game, and cruised the rest of the way for the 30-19 victory.
Long Beach State travels to Northern California for a pair of matches at Sacramento State and UC Davis, Sept. 21-23. |
