Loebl Returns to The Beach as Javelin Coach
Former Big West Athlete of the Year Takes Over Accomplished Javelin
Program
June 5, 2006
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State Head Track & Field Coach Andy Sythe
announced that former 49er, Cory Loebl, has been selected as javelin coach
for the men’s and women’s programs. The former Big West Male
Athlete of the Year is believed to be the only conference athlete to score
in four throwing events in one year and tallied an unmatched total of
44 points in two conference championships from 2002 to 2003.
The Oregon native was a three-time NCAA qualifier, just missing out on
All-America honors in 2002. He was a four-time all-conference performer,
winning the conference title in the discus in in 2003. The former team
captain left the 49ers ranking in the top-10 in six events, including
No. 2 marks in the indoor shot put and weight throw. His combined point
total of 30 in 2003 is the most of any Big West athlete since 1999.
"I'm ecstatic to see Cory return to The Beach. His leadership skills
and ability to understand the inner workings associated with throwing,
especially the javelin, are a true asset to the program," said reigning
Big West Coach of the Year Andy Sythe, whose men's team won a Big West
title in 2006. "When he threw for us, he truly showed his versatility
and his ability to lead an event group. From just the first few days of
practice Cory and the throwers have started to develop a special bond.
Cory should continue the program's success, especially in the javelin."
The javelin program is coming off unprecedent success over the past half
decade under former javelin coach Todd Riech. Nine of the marks on the
women's side and four on the men's side are currently in the top-10 at
LBSU. The javelin program has developed four conference champions and
had over a dozen regional qualifiers since 2003.
Loebl was a two-year letterwinner (2002-03) for the 49ers competing in
the javelin, discus, hammer throw and shot put, ranking in the top-10
in all of them. He was selected as the 2003 Big West Conference Male Athlete
of the Year after a stellar performance at the Big West Championships.
Loebl earned all-conference honors in three of the four throwing events
and won the conference title in the discus. His 30 total points at the
outdoor championships was a school-record. He also was a two-time Big
West Track Athlete of the Week selection.
At the 2002 Big West Championships he also earned all-league accolades.
Loebl competed at the 2002 NCAA Championships and qualified for three
events at the 2003 NCAA Regionals. Loebl was voted team MVP during the
2003 season and also served as team captain. In 2002 he earned the Most
Inspirational Award.
Loebl also excelled in the classroom as he was a member of the 2003 Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) All-Academic Team for indoor track and
he was named to the 2003 Big West Conference Spring All-Academic Team.
He was selected as Long Beach State’s 2004 Big West Conference Male
Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a two-time U.S. Track Coaches Association
(USTCA) Academic All-American (2002-03).
Prior to LBSU, Loebl was a two-time regional champion at Clackamas Community
College outside of Portland, OR.
He earned his degree from Long Beach State in December of 2003 in kinesiology
and currently is teaching Carmenita Middle School in Cerritos. He received
his teaching credential in 2004. He and his wife, Melissa, live in Long
Beach.
