49ers Can't Duck Oregon LB Hits Just .061 in First Loss of the Season

LONG BEACH, CA -- The Long Beach State women's volleyball team suffered its first setback of the season after a 3-1 loss to the Oregon Ducks on Wednesday evening from the Walter Pyramid. Game scores were 30-16, 24-30, 30-24, 30-22 in favor of the Ducks.
Long Beach State fell to 3-1 on the season, while Oregon remained undefeated at 3-0.
Mariko Crum led the 49ers with 13 kills, while Erin Little posted a match-high 17 kills for Oregon. Quincy Verdin checked in with 11 kills in the losing effort for LBSU. The 49ers hit just .061 for the match (48-39-147), and were out-blocked, 19.5-12.5.
Behind three Mira Djuric aces and 13 Long Beach State hitting errors, Oregon claimed game one, 30-16. The Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 lead, before the 49ers rallied for four straight points to take a 4-3 lead (UO ball handling error). The Ducks quickly recovered and took a 10-5 lead after a 49er attack error. However Long Beach State closed to within one point of the lead (11-12) after a Sonja Newcombe attack error. That was as close as The Beach got, as Oregon went on an 18-5 run to close out the set.
Long Beach State tightened up its defense and evened the match at 1-1 after a 30-24 game two victory. The 49ers recorded 7.5 blocks (they did not record a block in the first game) and limited the Ducks offense to just a .176 attack percentage. LBSU jumped out to a 10-3 lead after a UO attack error, and built a 20-15 advantage after a Cynthia Buggs service ace. Oregon had one last offensive push and went on a 7-2 run late to tie the score at 23-23. The 49ers however responded with a 7-1 run, capped off by a Nicole Vargas service ace, to earn the game victory.
The Ducks regained the momentum of the match after a 30-24 game three victory. Oregon unlocked an 11-11 tie with a 9-1 run to take a 20-12 lead, before Long Beach State went on an 8-2 run, capped off by an error by Oregon, to close the gap at 20-22. The Ducks remained stable and did not let LBSU back in the game to earn the 2-1 match lead. Long Beach State was plagued once again by poor hitting, and netted just a .024 clip in the frame.
Oregon established control early in game four and came away with the 30-22 victory to seal the match victory.
Long Beach State travels to Lincoln, NE for the Nebraska Labor Day Tournament, Sept. 1-3. The 49ers conclude the three-day tournament vs. host and No. 1-ranked Nebraska on Sunday.
