49ers Finish 89th In Directors' Cup Standings July 12, 2006 LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State finished in 89th place in the final 2005-06 U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup Standings as announced by NACDA. The 49ers received a total of 180 points as five different sports earned points. Stanford finished No. 1 in the final standings for the 12th consecutive year, followed by UCLA, Texas, North Carolina and Florida.
Scoring points for LBSU this past year were women's volleyball, women's golf, softball, women's tennis and men's track & field. Men's track garnered the most points, 56.5, thanks to finishing tied for 16th at the recent NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Tennis picked up 50 points for advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championships, while softball and volleyball earned 25 points apiece for their NCAA appearances. Women's golf earned 23.5 points for its NCAA Regional appearance.
The 89th place finish is the best for Long Beach Staet since the 1998-99 season when the 49ers tied for 43rd place overall with 210.0 total points. That year women's volleyball, men's volleyball, baseball, softball and men's track earned points for the 49ers, with women's volleyball winning the 1998 National Championship.
Since 2004-05, only the Top 100 schools are announced in the final standings, compared to previous years where all Division I schools received a placing. Last year the 49ers did not rank in the Top 100. Since its inception in the 1993-94 season, the 49ers have been ranked in the Top 100 seven times in the 13 years.
Developed as a joint effort between USA Today and NACDA, the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup program is the only all-sports competition that recognizes the institutions in each of the four categories -- Div. I, Div. II, Div. III and with the best overall athletics program.
